Yea with my phone as well I didn't realize at the time but I didn't need root either cause I had 3Button Recovery enabled on my phone

Should probably clarify that in the post, you don't need to root if you already have recovery
Once you flash the Ficeto JVH you're in the clear anyway since it comes with all the essentials!

I'm currently running Ficeto JVH base + Darky 10.1 on top
Runs pretty smooth and haven't had any issues

Once you have backed up efs, and can get to download mode all should be OK. You can flash any custom ROM all of them are root access and have clock work mod cwm.

So (for noobs reading this):

1 get root access.
2 back up your efs partition.
3 obtain download mode.
4 use Odin to flash a popular stock ROM with bootloaders.
5 use download mode again to flash a custom ROM.

1.83 exists, no experience of it personally myself.

You test 3 button download by turning the phone off completely (even take the battery out if you are unsure, then put it back in).

Then you hold the home button in, hold the volume down button in also, and then push in and hold in the POWER button. All three held in at the same time. Then, within 30 seconds, a screen should show up with a yellow triangle and a little robot digging in the dirt. That is download mode. At this stage you can now use Odin in the described manner.

All risks are yours alone. I am not responsible for your hair colour our the state of your phone lol.

If download mode will not go - after trying it 10 times, your phone does not have download mode.
There were many made and it is a known fault - although samsung in NZ pretends it is not a fault, Samsung international DOES know it (e.g. the samsung people in NZ are F-ing incompetent).
Download mode and recovery mode can be added using a patch from samsung themselves. Obtaining and applying it is the tricky part, come back if you need to and ask here or on XDA.

ANYWAY: the end result of all this fiddling is a much superior phone, the phone the sgs should have been on day one. A phone that thrills lol.

Cheers Brendan, whats the best way to back up the EFS folder?

Do i just root, use root explorer navigate to the internal memory and copy that folder and store it somewhere safe?

That's what I did, yes. There are several ways to do it, there is even a program - I think it's sgs tools - ?? - and it has a script for doing that too.

Then just zip it up. Store copies

The EFS contains your esn and other important info - without which your phone will NOT be recognised on the network. So if anything goes wrong with a flash - you sure want a backup to put back in...

Phone showed up today with the following....

MODEL – GT-I9000

Firmware-2.2.1

Baseband – I9000XXJPY

Kernel – 2.6.32.9

Build # Froyo.XWJSD

is it still safe to flash the method mentiond Joe or Brendan?

via upgrading to Ficeto_Deodexed_JVH_I9000_ODIN and then Darkys 10.1?

cheers guys, was thinking of just seeing what 2.2.1 was like maybe first?

got recovery and download mode so thats that part sorted :D

Done done and done.

Hardest part was rooting, Z4 doesnt work for froyo and gingerbreak doesnt work for SGS, used super oneclick.

If i ever want to revert to standard 2.3.3 can i just use odin and reflash the first package?

Yes, you just use Odin to flash back to a stock Samsung firmware. If you are cunning you choose a firmware from the region the phone originally came from - e.g. Asia, Australia, new Zealand...

Useful if you have to claim warranty.

Where is the EFS folder located?

i have root but still cant find it?

Ive backed up using nitrality

but the back up contains...

IMEI folder with BT and mps_code.dat
nv.log
nv_data.bin
nv_data.bin.md5

but it didnt back up nv_data.bk which is spose to be the most important file?
