I feel that the iPhone cost is a major reason. With an iPhone at $1300 for the top model and typically $999 for an Android top end, that a caude. More still that you can get many fine Andriod options in the Under $999 and well under. The only real measure of comparison is if iPhone had a $499 option.

iPhone 4 on VF Smart 1 is only $699. A lot of people will be swayed by that.

True but is just the 16Gb, still $879 for the 32GB and the plan isnt great. It does have extra texts and 3Gb data until further notice, which may or may not be a long time. Locked into 24 months which is not ideal as plans and phones evolve.

lokhor: I don't think Android has reached critical mass here in NZ yet. The general public tend to not know much about smartphones and most have only heard of the iPhone. I have been able to convince most of my family that Android is the way to go (apart from a stubborn iPhone using sister) and now my mum uses an Android phone and my brother has one being shipped to him.

It would be very interesting to see some statistics though.

Yeah, dont know if I agree with this. I have one, my wife has one (I bought it for her, shes stay at home mum) and now 2 of her (also stay at home mum) friends (who dont know each other - so its just coincidence they both have one now) also have Android phones. The latest one was on Facebook etc on the phone within a day.

Granted they probably dont know what they have BUT they do like the technology.

Given my experiences I would say the uptake is getting better. BTW Im pretty sure I know more people with Android phones that iPhones.

Here are mobile stats from a couple of top50 mainstream kiwi sites for this month. First from a mobile site to show iPhone v Android and second from a regular site to show iPhone + iPad v Android

Key takeaway is people actually use the browser and apps a lot more on iPhone and don't to the same extent on Android (especially cheap models) - just like noone used the browser on Symbian.

There are about 5x more Android devices in NZ v iPad yet 2x more browsing being done on iPad.

I agree with nstan, I see students in uni with smartphones 90% uses iphones. Quite sad really in my opinion.

Not so amongst engineering students. More Androids than iPhones around there (but mostly cheap ones).

Also depends which uni:

down here in Wellington:

- Most students use dumbphones(nokias, samsung, lg flips)
- Most staff use HTC Snaps still
- Higher up staff/staff coming out of their contracts get a choice between Galaxy S and iPhone 4
- Most students with smartphones(if you can call them that) have the cheaper Android i5500 series or the Ideous
- Those with tablets mostly have iPad 1s, although iPad 2s and Galaxy Tabs do float round

I wonder if that has to do with tethering also?

Because if I'm on the move and I have my netbook on me, occasionally I'll use my phone to browse the net.  But if I want to sit down for an hour or so, I usually just tether my laptop to my phone

My work currently only gives out BlackBerry phones to staff as they feel no other platform is secure enough.

Na, I'd say the stats are derived from the user agent, ie browser, and not from the connection itself.
Otherwise stats would be based on what router you use ;) Imagine a Dlink 522 showing up as number 1... weird.

If it's based on user agent then you need to be aware that a lot of the geekier Android users modify this so they don't have to use the mobile versions of sites.
