Na, I'd say the stats are derived from the user agent, ie browser, and not from the connection itself.
Otherwise stats would be based on what router you use ;) Imagine a Dlink 522 showing up as number 1... weird.

Oh yeah, that's true actually :) that;s why I use Opera or Skyfire and set it to Desktop. It identifies itself as IE6.0 on most websites for that reason

I don't know how you'll ever find that out since it's unlikely that VNZ, TNZ, 2Deg, TC etc will ever reveal the numbers they've sold (being competitive intel and all) and that's the answer you asked for.

The iPhone had a 2 year head start so logic suggests that there are fewer Androids out there than iPhones and loads fewer than Symbian handsets. In fact, it's those Symbian units that will continue be the largest presence until their batteries finally fail, screens and keypads stop working or they just get lost.

Google's financial report states that Android activations number 350,000 a day, with some analyst claiming there will be 165,000,000 Android devices sold yearly by the end of this year. No, I don't know how he/she'd know that for certain, but at 350,000 a day, it doesn't seem too much of a stretch. I guess NZ will mirror the trend worldwide so expect Android's penetration [blushes profusely] to expand [more blushing] enormously [mortified at the innuendo] in the next few years. The smartphone market is some way from maturity yet.

On the anecdotal front, a client of mine has just changed from iP3Gs to Android, family friend who I haven't seen for a couple of years is sporting an Android, and three employees of another major client have chosen Android phones also - interestingly, all the Androids are Samsung Galaxy Ss.

I don't know anybody personally who has gone from Android to iOS for a phone but have noted 3 acquaintences have sprung for an iPad2. My wife has expressed the desire to own one, so come birthday time, I suspect that she will. Me, I don't get tablets, at least not with the limited functionality they currently possess, so I'll be sticking with my Adobe CS4 capable Asus Eee PC for the foreseeable future.

Bit off-topic, but I agree about the future. Without a stylus and a physical keyboard, there are a lot of things that touchscreen devices have insufficient precision for, so hybrid devices like the Transformer may well be the answer.

Quite possibly, but I doubt that they'll share 'em with us. Nor will Apple. Or Nokia. Or Motorola.

The reason why 'net numbers are so often quoted is simply that's the only metric that can consistently be gathered. But such numbers notoriously fail to reflect anything but the online behaviour patterns of the demographics they're measuring.

While there are huge numbers of Motorola and Nokia phones in regular use, you'd never know that from the web stats since the majority of such devices are ill-suited to online activites and don't get used in that way. They're still out there though.

The carriers also have all the info, but they're not sharing either.

So we're doomed to listen to the guesses of 'analysts'. My gut instinct is that Android is trending so sharply upward that in the future, possibly not too far distant, Android devices will be more common than any other type of smartphone. Or not.

Closer to home, we may be seeing an interesting parallel here at Geekzone. With its 2 year head-start, the iOS (nee iPhone OS) subforum has had 1443 topics posted and 19154 posts during its 4 year existence. The Android subforum, although having been born 2 years after its Apple counterpart already has 1088 topics and 18238 replies in its 2 years.

My guess is that at about the time Android overtakes iOS here in those stats, it will pretty much reflect the situation in the real world re their relative positions in terms of user base.

Or perhaps not.

Key takeaway is people actually use the browser and apps a lot more on iPhone and don't to the same extent on Android (especially cheap models) - just like noone used the browser on Symbian.

There are about 5x more Android devices in NZ v iPad yet 2x more browsing being done on iPad.

This is so wrong. It just shows what devices people use to access web sites. It is not the number of devices around.

At best it would show which platform people are more likely to use when accessing web sites - not apps - and only really of any importance if you know the actual sales numbers around, otherwise it means, well, nothing.

You can't see people use it more on iPhone based on these numbers. You would have to have the same number of units sold and in use for both platforms to them compare the percentage, or make the percentages proportional to the sample size. Otherwise it doesn't mean anything...
