Hi,

My first world problem is that my current IR transmitter has been so shlte to the point where I feel like it is impacting my quality of life.  I have my TV placed in one room and the MYSKY decoder box stashed away in cabinet. The TV and the decoder are connected VIA an HDMI cable and the distance between them is about 8 Meters.

I am looking for a recommendation on a good quality IR extender that is aesthetically pleasing and will not cost me an arm and a leg.

I've done some research and found the below:
1) http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011009&p_id=9964&seq=1&format=2#description
2)http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productView.asp?ID=AR1813&form=CAT2&SUBCATID=1012#4 (at least one person from Geekzone is using this solution and has recommended it)
3) http://www.listeningpost.co.nz/Brands/Elan/Listening-Post-Christchurch-Elan-IRE1-Single-Emitter-__I.16585__N.27183__C.27383 & http://www.listeningpost.co.nz/Brands/Elan/Listening-Post-Christchurch-Elan-IRE3-Emitter-__I.25442__N.27183__C.27383 (these guys are in CHCH so not sure if they will ship to AKL)

I've been sporting my transmitter below for a few years now but lately the whole experience of watching TV has been an agonizing one (to put it in good terms) I find this bad boy to be too bulky and the signal quality have deteriorated to the point where i must consider other options . If you can suggest or recommend anything i would greatly appreciated it.

Anything that is wireless will suck as they all just modulate it on the 433MHz band which is now cluttered up with peoples weatherstations, power monitors and other constantly transmitting stuff.

I got some IR over coax from jaycar in the past, worked sweet as with the mysky but had the problem that it would also repeat the TV remote, so I would end up turning off the other TV since the emitter would reflect off the room and back to the TV. Solved that when I changed brand of the bedroom tv.

I feel your pain. I bought one of these
IRSENDKIT1 IR EXTENDER KIT
which has since been superseded

http://www.tradetech.co.nz/shop/Outdoor+Aerials+%26+Accessories/Remote+Extenders/IRSENDKIT3.html I believe. Works great and its all cable .
Use with an older mysky ,non hd box. So cant confirm it will work with an HD unit, but ask the supplier

+1 for the wired option.
I use a jaycar wall plate which does HD component + IR over Cat5.

Always had issues with the wireless ones I tried

This uses an AAA Battery transmitter. The MYSKY remote uses AA so i don't think it will fit.

Looking at the wired options:
Since i have an existing HDMI cable between the MYSKY receiver and the TV i wonder if i can utilize to transmit the IR signal with some kind of an HDMI splitter and an IR sender\receiver.

This concept looks interesting http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=109&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011009&p_id=9964&seq=1&format=2#description

I use one of those with Mysky, and it is absolutely brilliant. I'm still not exactly sure how it works - it's like magic, but no problem with using it in different rooms from the mysky box.

It comes with an AA size sleeve that the AAA transmitter sits inside, so works with remotes that use AAA or AA batteries.

In the remote the encoder IC draws virtually no current while the IR LEDs draw about 50mA-100mA pulsing on and off, so by measuring the battery current the Battery RF Transmitter knows what code to send.
