So, as the topic says, I think Igloo is pathetic, and I'm posting here so wouldbe buyers can be aware of the failures(in my opinion).

Why you ask is it bad?
Read on.

There is no tvnz on demand streaming.

You must pay for any streams(around $2 for a tv episode, $7 for a movie).

There is not the lineup tvnz has either, like the many New Zealand series.
Your guess is as good as mine as to why this feature has been left out which would be very usefull to their target userbase.

There is no media player function.

I'm aware it's currently in the quick setup guide on their website, and on the original packing too I believe, but there is no such feature.
I have been told in the original firmware there was a menu option for it, but it didn't work.
There's not one in the latest firmware and there is no information as to if this feature is going to be developed.

No additional HD content over freeview.

The extra channels avilable to purchace are not in HD. The only HD content is what's already available via freeview.

No longer unmetered access.

Igloo has recently changed CDN, the new one not having unmetered deals with isps so users data will now be counted.

No recording.

Igloo has two usb slots, either of which can be fitted with a stick of hdd which can provide live pause/rewind.
You cannot however record(like with the remotes record button) anthing you are watching.
Clearly the device could be made to(as it's recording for the live pause feature already) but is disabled.

Parting thoughts.

These devices seem to have been cut down to only provide profit generating services and not providing any of the conveniences users have come to expect. My mum would love to be able to watch Shortland Street on demand on her TV instead of the computer. These devices could have been great. Big fail Igloo.

Of course you're getting a cut-down solution - that's the point. If you want the full feature set then you have the option of subscribing to Sky.

Too bad someone forced you to buy it.

I like to think that we'll look back on this period as when the Sky monopoly began to fall. I'm not kidding now, with iSKY and TVNZ on demand etc, I see the future as being web based, and/or TV/PS3 app based etc. That's nothing new really, just that I'm starting to think that way personally. As with the OP, I had high hopes for igloo, but as NonprayingMantis etc have said, there's no way igloo can be what we want it to be, without that severely hitting Sky.

I think people want selective purchasing of content, and that conflicts significantly with Sky's platform of a base fee plus add on package steps. I just want access to the live sports I follow only, and I don't care who provides it to me, and increasingly I don't care about the delivery method either. If I have a box that receives the signal via terrestrial transmissions, satellite or internet, it's all the same just as in in the end it's being displayed in HD on my TV.

Sorry, end of rant, but rant was in the thread title right?

What I would want is tvnz's existing services(like tvnz on demand) being available.

No Shortland Street for a New Zealand based streaming service ... Fail.

Remember this is supposed to be a joint venture between tvnz and sky.

Looks like tvnz are there in name only ;)

Meh, it does what it does and actually does it well compared to some cheap STB's. Name me another box that does all the things you are talking about? Does that box cost $99? Yes they did not make the ultimate STB, It is just a slightly cynical way to resell bad sky channels, but it actually works well compared to other cheap STB's. That is why my parents now happily have one on their bedroom TV.

But that is a limited time discounted price. RRP was about $200, so for those people who paid $200, you would probably expect more over a standard HD freeview box.

Everything you mentioned can be easily found with a quick search of the forums on geekzone - these days it's easy to do your research before you part with your dollars.

I've read 2 different accounts of igloo today both conflicting however it seems that one did their research and one did not.

Show me any device, other than a couple of TVs and a PS3 where TVNZ ondemand (and TV3 for that matter) are available.

Could save a few dollars with that... as long as the free 1 month trial hasn't been initialized? In which case, it would be worse than buying new.

Touché

I think this is more of a debate about the missed opportunities of Igloo.  As above, by all accounts the box does what it's designed to do quite nicely.  The problem really is it's not the box/system that we want, which is back to earlier multiple discussion about who the h3ll this thing is actually targeted at?

It doesn't do enough to make it widely appealing, PVR/TVNZ integration if TVNZ are involved with it etc, (and to that they should be showing TVNZ kidzone etc for free on it...), iSKY playback etc.  And the Sky content isn't pitched cheap enough to appeal to many, as this would take customers from 'Real Sky'.

I'm thinking parent/old people who watch TV1 and some of the Sky basic channels (Discovery/UK TV) etc.  Past that I can't see what the appeal would be.  A basic freeview box is $80 in sat or terrestrial flavours from the warehouse, and it doesn't need an internet connection to function.

iPad. iPhone both have TVNZ OnDemand, and its very nice.

Cant be airplayed though unfortunately.

Also, TVNZ OnDemand is available on laptops, which can be easily plugged into any modern TV with the aid of a $10 HDMI cable
