Sky TV heads off HBO Max app to have HBO Hub on its platform

It has long been rumoured that HBO would launch its Max streaming app in New Zealand – going over Sky’s head to offer its content directly to Kiwi consumers in the same manner as Disney+.

The chatter heated up after HBO’s parent, Warner Bros Discovery (WBD), took control of Three.

But in an expanded Sky TV-WBD deal revealed this morning, Sky TV will remain the exclusive home of Max content.

From October 30, there will be a new Max hub and dedicated HBO linear channel on the new Sky Box, Sky Pod and Sky Go. The Max hub will also feature on Sky’s Neon streaming service.

No mention of fixing the dire streaming product, just adding more content to it. Guess its still the high seas in that case.

I watch a free movie on Neon on Saturday and if sure the sound was in plain old 2 channel stereo not DD5. 1. It was the latest Aquaman movie.

If you were disappointed with the quality, I blame it on your choice of movie as much as anything else. 😄

I have had the US Max for about a year now. Obviously, it has HBO's stuff but there is a lot of other good stuff too. It also broadcasts a lot of content in 4k with Atmos. Will Sky's offering match this?

They are avoiding answering that so you can only conclude that the answer is no.

I'm tempted but it's not exactly a bargain - the 4K/Atmos offer is NZ$35 a month. A bit cheaper buying a year in advance, but I'd hate to purchase that and then lose access for some reason...

Also, the current offer of free sports doesn't improve its value for me! @Caketiger: Do you know if Max ever does decent discounts on monthly or annual plans?

Sky is offering HBO to its existing customers with starter + entertainment at no additional cost, and at $35 p/m to buy standalone this is one heck of a deal

I wonder how long this will be until there is another Sky price increase as this is going to be unsustainable IMHO

I agree, it's not a bargain compared to Neon but I am willing to pay more for 4k and better sound quality. Also agree that the sport does not add much unless although there is a lot of obscure cycling. Sadly, I have not seen Max available at a discount although keep your eyes peeled on Black Friday next month.
