I purchased a DVB-S decoder the other day with the intention of recieving SBS, I have done a bit of research on the matter and I realise I probably can't watch Sky and SBS at the same time due to them being on different polarities.

My question is though will I be able to switch from Sky to SBS by simply turning off the alternate decoder? Or will I have to manually change settings on both decoders?

We have MySkyHDi and the decoder I purchased is one of these.

there used to be vertical channels, but I don't know if there is any more

if the Sky box is on a horizontal polarity, it will not allow you to receive SBS (which is a channel on vertical polarity), as horizontal overrides vertical

And from memory the mySky/Sky boxes hold the Horizontal polarity even if they are in standby. Would need to check this though, but if it's true you'd have to really turn the Sky decoder off.

So if I turn the alternate STB off at the wall, it should work fine?

Sky holds the polarity, because it keeps on receiving the default stream to get the TV guide and system messages/firmware updates.
