I've come into possession of an OEM CDMA Apache, lacking of course a TCNZ rom

Any thoughts on the likelihood that flashing the rom extracted from a genuine Telecom Apache onto this phone would render it usable ?

cheers

Unlikely you would be able to do it yourself, however if you sent it away to Telelogistics (Sp?), the Telecom repair people I'm sure you could get it done for a few coins...

HOWEVER Telecom won't register unknown ESNs on their network so it won't be usefull

Thanks.

I found this piece inspiring http://www.geekzone.co.nz/inane/1119

So there's no way to bull<profanity> TCNZ into registering a foreign ESN ?

I was hoping to get an incompetent CSR at 126 (as per usual) who would blithely add it into the system some how, wishful thinking

There is a bit on the Telepermit website ( http://www.telepermit.co.nz/nl137.html#sec3, Google cache link ), with an explanation why foreign handsets will not be connected.

The inability to connect foreign handsets is not isolated to Telecom. When I was over in China - I had to use a GSM device or a cheap CDMA phone...

  1. I doubt Telegistics will touch it, but you could try.
  2. You could try flashing with the Telecom updated ROM, but that update doesnt kill the NAM settings, so I suspect it wont update all the required CDMA network settings either.
  3. Telecom will *not* register an ESN for you. It just doesnt happen. And no, a 126 (or other helpdesk rep) couldnt do it, even if they wanted to, and tried.

It is not just an ESN that needs loading. Telecom would also need a thing called an AKey. The chances of getting it enabled are 'zero'. Tony is right - a CSR does not have access to load ESN/AKey.

wont make any difference the esn/akey is specific to each phone and ties up with the serial number, best thing to do is use your recently acquired device as a paper weight, and buy a new one from Telecom

You don't think there are tools on the net to change these things?
I don't know about an apache but there certainly are for other CDMA phones

Thanks all for the nuggets of wisdom.

Here's holding out for number portability...

Number Portability won't help. You will still need to connect it to a CDMA network in first place. And this is Telecom New Zealand. Only after connected you will be able to transfer the number.

Yes there are tools on the internet, there are lots of them for changing IMei numbers on gsm phones. But like you pointed out filterer Telecom wont do anything about ESN's that they have not Generated themselves

Cheers,

I didn't mean to imply portability would enable me to activate my OEM Apache; more that the I'm looking forward to keeping my 027 # switching to VF and using a HTC Wizard or equiv
