We have our TiVo happily doing very little except waiting for the VTV box to stop working (perhaps end of September, perhaps not if Sky don't have there box in customer hands, and instead pay Vodafone to keep supporting VTV for a bit longer).

We noticed a few days ago that all four front lights are on. Green is steady (have read that flashing green is bad), yellow is not as bright as the others, then goes bright when we push a remote button (as it should do). Red and Blue are permanently on. We are not sure they were in that state before.
The machine appears to be working OK.
We used the menu options to reboot the TiVo. The lights came back on as soon as the machine had finished its rather elongated restart process.
What does this mean please?

Thanks!

Steve

the yellow should only light when receiving a remote control command, the red is recording and the blue is a network transfer from another Tivo, I suspect there are issues with your tivo

Greg is correct. I've never seen a situation like that. Not a common fault.

Thanks @gregmcc and @spong
We will try powering it off for a day just in case that helps. If we buy another (cheaper) TiVo, can we move the updated chip and 2 Tb HDD to another machine? (Assuming the fault is not firmware in the chip - unlikely I should think.)

As long as the PROM has been socketed (always when I do them) it can be moved to another Tivo, although the cost saving is marginal. The 2TB drive could be moved, but would have to go through a "full clear and delete" cycle once installed in the new Tivo. All recordings and settings will be lost. This can't be avoided. The problem you have won't be with the PROM, I'm pretty certain of that.

Just occurred to me tonight, @gregmcc and @spong, that I never told you guys that being powered off for a couple of days fixed out Tivo. (A few hours didn't.) Seemed polite to let you know. It was good having your confirmation that it was not a common fault thanks.
