Hi all,

Want to get into the world of DSLR for a while and interested in Canon 600D or 1000D. I saw a deal on Grabone today for Canon Rebel T3 which I understand is US version of Canon 1100D. I am wondering is that a good deal for DSLR newbie? The price seems very good for a DSLR.

I am interested in landscape photography and want to do some HD video while travel as well. The lens was 18-55 IS II, will that be good enough or I will get some other lens like 18-200/18-135?

Yep it'll do a good job. Stick with the included "kit" lens to start with, they're decent. An 18-135/18-200 has more zoom, but isn't always better - I find I rarely want that much zoom anyway.

Good lenses start at $1000, and my most expensive (70-200 F2.8 VR II) is probably $3500. You can pay $10K for a long fast lens.

Aperture is what's important with most lenses. Constant aperture zooms are the best zooms, variable usually less so. Best image quality comes from primes, which don't zoom at all - eg a 50mm F1.8 is cheap and quite decent quality, $300 max. I have the Nikon version.

An external flash will help portrait photography a lot.

Lenses are more important than the body, but as Timmmay says you're probably best to stick with a basic kit lens until you figure out your needs. Really only you can decide what lenses you need.

I'm not personally familiar with Canon gear but generally speaking affordable entry level DSLR bodies are remarkably good these days. The only reason I upgraded mine is that I wanted more dedicated control buttons/dials and a top LCD panel to allow me to quickly change settings under pressure.

I've got one more question, I've found some web site selling the 1100D with 18-55mm III lens. Is that better than the 18-55mm IS II? The 18-55mm III price is higher than the IS II model.

There's probably little difference between them. Make sure you get the IS version - it stands for image stabilisation, which is really helpful to have.
