I have a HRV system installed which has the optional extra Summer kit installed. My question is by viewing the controller is there a way to establish if air is been taken from the ceiling cavity or outside the house. My controller has a diagram of a house and my understanding is that if the arrow points from the ceiling to house then air is been drawn from the ceiling and if it points from outside the house to the inside of the house then it is been drawn from outside. I need to know if I am correct in this assumption.

I have tried ringing HRV but had the greatest difficulty explaining what I wanted to know.

I would never get another one . The main reason is you cant control it . It has a mind of its own when it starts and stops I turn it off when it is hot like now And both screen doors are open with air blowing through the house, Then it decides to start itself So I shut it off again and it starts again in the middle of the night and blows air into the house. cold air from roof
That is really nice in the middle of winter with a frost Getting cold air into the house at 4 am really turns me on
A mate has put a timer on his so that it only goes at 10am to 11am for an hour every day and he says that has helped but he is waiting for the service time to see if they disconnect it

the fans only run on low speed barely anything it wont be enough to make a difference to how cold your house feels in the winter lol

We've got a DVS - was in the house when we bought it and retained it through the major renovation. Once we moved back into the house the DVS wasn't rewired. We had significant condensation in the bedrooms. Once we got the DVS going the condensation was never seen again.

As far as hot/cold - I don't really understand it - I think it only comes on if it can move the house temperature towards the target... As I type this it's 23 degrees in the attic and 26 in the house so guess it's moving the air down?

I can tell you from experience this is quite incorrect. The fans running even at their slowest make a significant difference to how cold the house gets in a cold area.

that's right in the summer it will blow cool air from attic at night and during the day the fan will stop as the attic temp will be higher then the ideal temp you have set (22 for us)

basically HRV the is smart in how it operates it's pretty much set and forget. although there was this one time I saw it bringing in warm air from the attic that was warmer then the house and trying to warm the house over 22 I tried switching it off and on again to refresh it but that didn't work about 20 mins later the fan had stopped so I have put in down to a one off glitch. I will call HRV and ask why it did that and is there a way to reset it if it does it again.

pretty much, if the attic temp is above the set temp then it will generally kill the fan. if the attic temp is at or below the set temp then it will turn the fan on, and depending on the fan settings will adjust the fan speed to suit.

i found out when i had an issue that they had updated firmware for the controller which made it more functional to use.

To me its not rocket science, it should be either on or off. I opened the door to get cool air in. I certainly dont need some idiot machine trying to heat it up again,who thinks it knows better than me. Its a waste of power and filter life and wear and tear on the moving parts that is not required
In summer I always have my doors open and the security screens locked, So why do I need an HRV running at all. I want control of its power supply
And if it was anything worth its salt ,It would give me that Without having to go up in the roof to do it It should be on the keypad and not controlled by a timer, either off or on and I decide when it is on or off

I have a cheap old ventilation system running in my ceiling that the previous owner put in. I have it plugged into a $10 digital timer from Miter Ten. It runs when I tell it to.

still useful to have on in summer cause at night it will bring cool air from your attic to cool your home and keep it smelling fresh

for DVS no idea, i ended up with a new control panel as there was something wrong with the old one, had new firmware on it

I had an HRV system in my first house, NEVER again.

The salesman ripped me off and outright lied to me twice.

The product stopped the windows from getting condensation but that's about it.

The next house I bought a Smart Vent system, and it is far superior to the HRV product.
Insulated ducting, far more control of the system, real time displays on what is happening, actual real support over the phone....
