I have been given a table top outdoor gas heater

I'm on bottled gas and have an outside bayonet fitting,

Do I still need to use an regulator or can I just use a screw fitting with a long hose,

The supply to the heater obviously needs to be regulated. Is the bayonet on the regulated side of the supply?

Does the twin 9kg bottle set up upside not have a regulator in it?

( Sorry this is first house with this set up), otherwise I would just use the 4.5kg BBQ gas bottle, just seems funny that would have to fit regulator into the outside bayonet fitting as well, would look super ugly

There's high pressure bottle side to the regulator and low pressure everywhere else. IIRC the regulations specify that the pipe between bottle and pressure regulator be as short as possible.

Upside?
