I have a trial membership for Quickflix from buying a Samsung Galaxy Note and the app works as expected on that device. There is also an app that works with the iPad. However I really want the stream to the TV and have been using a Raspberry Pi with XBMC that has worked pretty well with Airplay on the iPad and not so well with apps like Twonky Beam on the Galaxy for other content like Youtube.

I note that the Quickflix FAQs state that they do not support streaming from the iPad to a TV as "Our obligations with regards to copy protection prevents this functionality" which is the same argument used by TVNZ for their OnDemand app (this is frustrating because OnDemand streams ads fine via Airplay but not the program).

I don't really want to buy a smart TV yet as my current HD set works fine and I am not very impressed with current smart apps (tried OnDemand on an Samsung TV in a store and couldn't fast forward or rewind - may have been a TV or app issue - even the Pi works with the TV remote to navigate within streams).

Has anyone had good results with Quickflix to their TV on other supported or even unsupported devices? It may be time for a media centre PC but the need for Silverlight may be an issue with Linux?

Does you Galaxy Note have ability maybe with an adapter or HDMI out put?? My old Galaxy S2 does..

I believe it supports an adapter but I haven't got one yet. It seems you need to power the adapter (insert in series with existing power adapter) which isn't a big deal but it still leaves you tethered to the TV (and power) and having to go to the Note to operate controls (if you don't want HDMI cable drapped around the lounge).

I was hoping for an easy and cheap way to get Quickflix to the TV with remote control but this would work if the other options are worse. Thanks for the suggestion.

Personally this sort of requirement annoys me, and even with a full time HTPC navigation is still a bit nasty (I've blogged this before so I wont rehash all of that, under blogs here).

Thanks for the feedback and I am also annoyed with the issues around getting content onto the bigger screen (Quickflix are only one of many with this issue and they are trying with their different platform support).

I checked out bluray players at the local store and came away confused about the level of support for the smart features - it seems the cheaper players have a more crippled set of features and there seemed little guarantee of long term support as apps evolve. It was suggested by the salesman that mirroring from the tablet (e.g. AllShare or Miracast) might be more useful but potential content locking by the provider for this "copying" makes me nervous this would be stable.

I am currently using a laptop with HDMI which works fine for picture and sound but navigation is a bit annoying. Perhaps the next 6-12 months might see some robust and more standardised answers but I'm not holding my breath.

Check on the quickflix site. I thought that some Samsung smart TVs included a quickflix app. Which mean that there may be a few Samsung bluray players that do also.

Quickflix is definitely supported on some of the product range but you are right to say "a few". They say "On compatible 2010 - 2012 devices, the Quickflix Application may be pre-loaded on the SmartHub, so simply select the Quickflix logo to launch the application.". It seems the two cheaper Samsung blu-ray models at my local store don't have Smart Hub and the salesman said he thought they wouldn't support Quickflix while they have basic apps like facebook.

If I go up in price you can get it or change to another brand (a Sony has it at a cheap price) but then missing out on other smart features like TVNZ On-Demand which seems exclusive to Samsung. I know I can pay more to get Quickflix plus other smart features but I was exploring the best value proposition and I don't think I have found it yet. Thanks for the feedback anyway.

PS3 might work for you

The Warehouse has them for $299 if you can find one

supports NZ apps for Quickflix, TVNZ on demand, youtube etc

They work very well as a media player

We have a Sony blu ray player which has quickflix. Think the model number is bdp-390. Has wifi built in too. I think the Warehouse sell them now for around $139. There was a thread about it on GZ the other day.

Grab yourself a PS3, or a Dish TV SmartVU Android stick...
It's Android 4.0, and the Quickflix app is included by default, and it'll cost you around $100.
