I am about to get more serious with my running, around $800 more serious, as such I thought I would see how everyone is tracking their exercise/runs or even general fitness.


Which device are we using, then which apps are we syncing that data with and do you share your data with friends/public?


If we could keep your first response in the format


1) [device] eg, Fitbit zip or iPhone or Garmin Forerunner 235 etc (Including any accessories people are using, HRM straps, footpods, scales etc)
2) [Tracking app] eg, Fitbit app or Mapmyrun or Gramin Connect etc
3) [Website] eg Strava, Garmin Connect, Smashrun,,Veloviewer, inKin etc






I will go first, but as I am brand new to this mine will be a little light on the details...

My Fenix is still in the post, and hopefully from any replies I will decide if I use Strava/Smashrun  or anything else out there.

1. Fitbit (Surge, Blaze and Alta), Fitbit Aria scales and Whithings.


2.Fitbit app and Withings app


3. Looked at InKin and looked at FitnessSyncer.


A shame Fitbit is so closed about their platform. They allow you to take data out but not to take data in - not for steps. I'd like to use the social part of it (a lot of people I know on Fitbit) but I rather use the Withings more because it looks like an actual watch.


FitnessSyncer seems to do a good job of consolidating the data in one place (without the social aspect).

I have been using the TomTom runner, does the trick for my current running and wanted something with a reasonable price. I use their app but you can export to all of the other fitness sites. Don't skimp on your shoes(but you probably already know this).

fitbit charge Hr








The fitbit hr is cool, I can see my resting heart rate has dropped over 10 beats a minute over the past year, from 59 to 48 beats per minute


mpow bluetooth head phones ($20 from aliexpress good quality 8hr battery, amazing deal).


My vodafone smart ultra is a little big for running in the pocket but fine in a backpack and the battery is great.  14km a day running gps tracking, connected to the fitbit 24hrs a day, streaming music to the headphones for at least an hour a day, couple of hours websurfing, push notifications for three email accounts, and still around 40-50% at the end of the day.

1) Garmin Vivoactive (the 1st one) with the Heart Rate strap
2) Natively on Phone + Garmin Connect
3) Gamin Connect (auto syncs with Strava).  Tapriik pulls from Garmin Connect and Feeds to Runkeeper, Dropbox, SmashRun.  


4) Shoe tracking is done via garmin, strava and with runkeeper going to  So I know about how many Kms my shoes have done.




If I could I get my data into Fitbit I would, as I like the social aspect of Fitbit....but for me, the Vivoactive beat out the Fitbit surge at the time, as I wanted waterproof (and lane swimming), independent GPS (which kills the Apple Watch) and simple apps (Soccer scoring, different watch faces).


One feature I would have like was built in music player, which I hear the tomtom has - as I still have to carry my phone with me - but anyway I'd probably still do that for safety/emergency reasons.

1) Android mobile phone & Pebble Time watch
2) Was using Runkeeper, just switched to Runtastic  (Pebble natively displays live data from Runkeeper / Runtastic such as speed, time, distance)
3) Same as (2), Pebble time comes with Android app showing graphs etc for daily steps etc.


Happy with my setup, I don't see the need to pay extra for a GPS watch when it's no hassle to run with my phone (plus I have my phone if there is an emergency!)

Like sxz, I carry my phone anyway, so figure on using the built in capabilities of it rather than adding extra devices.  Phone gives me the tracking of the GPS, recording via the apps and music playing. 
Recently added the H7 to have a look at my heart rate which is an interesting experience.


Strava possibly isn't the best app but when I first started using it, I picked it because several friends were using it.  Still, it does what I need it to.  Tracks the time, distance and pace, and nags me every 500m about my pace, or sometimes lack thereof.Seems to play nicely enough having both that and S-Health both tracking at the same time, though it can be amusing to note the differences in distances between the two apps.  At one stage on a 9km run, Strava ended up recording 500m more distance than S-Health despite being on the same device, interfacing with the same GPS.  Not overly bothered by it as it's for comparative results over time rather than outright numbers on any given run.

I am into half marathons and would normally run at least 25km over two days each weekend so I use it a lot, but all I really need is time and distance measures so I bought the cheapest variant of the Spark. I used to be okay running with my phone when I had an iPhone 5S, but the 6S+ is too big for comfort so GPS built into the watch is essential. The other main drawcard with the Spark is that it's fully waterproof and I have taken it swimming on numerous occasions.

I use a pair of these from The Warehouse and do arm exercises while sitting at my computer...



Walking otherwise as well when I can...
