I dunno, this needs to be well thought out before dumping easily accessible cars everywhere. Surely a requirement to register will be more then just a license.

So if someone knows someone’s license details they can register as that person.

People give out details when do credit, or someone steals someone’s wallet so details are obtainable, at least when at store you have to show license and picture on it for using it to prove who you are.

I haven't read the article, but City Hop in Auckland is "cars by the hour" with multiple cars parked / dumped at various locations.

City Hop is good and currently requires a small membership cost and cars must be returned to the original location.

There's a similar service in some cities around the world called 'Car2Go'. It pretty much is Lime but for cars, and it works extremely well. You pick up the car where you find it, and you leave it where you want (within the law, and within a certain boundary). The funny part, though, is a car2go costs barely more than a lime scooter in New Zealand.. so dunno how Lime will charge.

Without reading the article, I already thought car sharing services were a thing; Dunedin is too small .. but I have seen them in Auckland, Wellington and Melbourne

You can't dump them any old where. But regionally there are similar schemes.

I guess they're focusing on Lime due to the current rage and media stories still being at click worthy levels to most.

Did someone say Lime? MUST CLICK CAUSE PEOPLE DONE GETS HURT MMHMM!

"Users must have a clean licence"

So how will a company like Lime be able to determine this when they have no legal way to access NZ personal driving records. Honesty of the driver? I also have lied on a few forms before...

If a leaf is taken from the scooters book of honesty, something along the lines of "always wearing helmets" treating the scooter with respect and other users is an optional requirement. On that note, how much are people willing to pay to watch me drive one of these into the harbour?

Same as the similar insurance question and existing rental car questions. Claim denial. In the Lime case likely followed by a massive credit card charge.

Good luck, I got a Visa debit with no more than $20 on it at any given time.. What if I sign up with one of those E Credit cards?
Suppose they could launch a civil claim?

Think of it as being the same scenario as if you wrote off a rental car. They'll have a copy of your ID, you've driven a car into the water.. chances are both the Police and insurance companies will be in touch with you.
