Fact #1 when people buy NZ new car and want extras, e.g. weather liners or leather seats, they have to pay extra.
Fact #2 when people buy Japanese mported cars, they mainly buy them because they are significantly cheaper than new. Nevertheless when it comes to extras, the expectations more often than not is for the dealer to throw them all for free.
I had that conversation with numerous dealers who know exactly how much extras cost, but would rather "pretend" they do not know about them, or would even say "not possible" because they know exactly that buyer will expect it to be done at no extra charge.
It is not mandatory to sell cars with interface of the stereo or modern instrument cluster (speedometer) being in English, it is not mandatory to provide owner's manual in English, hence expectation for that to be done by the dealer at their cost has no grounds, despite the fact manuals are available as well as conversions and stereos for many popular makes and models.

Those dealers who change stereo, or/and convert dash upfront do incorporate cost in the sales price and they only do that for cars in a certain price range... Others would never bothered adding any extras regardless of the sales price..

FYI: the list of 2014+ models where Instrument cluster (speedometer) conversion to English is possible:
Toyota: Axio, Fielder, Vitz, Auris Hybrid, Aqua (2012-2020), Crown Hybrid, Harrier, Sienta Hybrid, Prius(2010-2014), Prius PHEV (2012-2014)
Honda: Fit, Grace,Vezel
Suzuki: SWIFT
Mazda: 2012+ Atenza, CX-5, CX-8
Nissan: Leaf (2011-2020)

I have recently had my CX5 instrument cluster converted from Japanese to English in NZ, the problem is that it has lost one feature.

My CX5 had the Mazda i-DM, a feature that gives a score on your driving and shows the average score.

Since the translation this feature has disappeared, there is no score or average score displayed, just a blank screen where that info usually is. The fuel readings have also gone from "E" and "F" to "0" and "1".

It is still good to have the translation as I can understand the other features, but it is worthwhile for anyone considering to have a language conversion done that there can be minor problems afterwards.

I do not know why @david321 is commenting on my post. I have NOT provided him with any service, or conversion. If someone has issues - it is only logical to raise them with their service provider.

Maybe because he thought you might be able to help.

Just putting it out there.

Think hes just making a comment, if he had mentioned it was not via you at the start of his post it'd be clearer :)

@RUKI I don't understand this post. In your OP you didn't mention that you provide such a service. And in @david321 's post, he did not make any claim that his conversion was done by you - it was just a comment about his experience.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

I was commenting because it fits into the same topic you were talking about, cluster language conversions is not a huge industry here is NZ so to be able to chat with people doing the same or providing the service is valuable they may be familiar with the issue I have, I thought I may have received some tips or tricks to fix this.

I was not implying that you did the conversion and as mentioned I have raised them with the service provider, I was given two options, to return to Japanese or leave it as is in English minus this feature.

I have searched extensively within New Zealand to find this service, I knew of you, and a place in Christchurch that gets the files to do the conversion "from a guy up north", I figured there was a good chance this would be you, but I never implied that in my comment.

I do not work via middle man, nor share any files or know-how, nor clean the mess after others.

Last car we bought the dealer managed to sell my partner a reproduced English manual for $40. Conversion was not mentioned. I would have said no. Turns out the menus are way more complex than the previous car. I will seriously consider conversion for the next one.

@gzt car dealers are struggling. Economy is bad, car dealers are trying to save every $1. Few yards I knew are now closed for good. Those remaining won't mention anything about extras, but some would bluntly lie, saying "it is impossible" - as I was told by people who bought hybrid cars from yards in Takapuna, in Penrose, in New Lynn, in Greenlane. They lie just to avoid doing anything extra as they assume buyers would demand to do it for free. Car dealers who lie are stupid. Many potential buyers do Google search upfront and know what is possible and just walk away from the yard they feel can't be trusted. Buyers who have not done Google search and trusted car dealer, but eventually found me via Google and come for conversions are telling me what they've being told at the yards by people who I knew in person and I knew were well aware of options. People say they would never buy from those yards ever again..
Few dealers who care about their reputation but still try to save $$, they tell their clients (only if being asked) that extras (I.e. language conversion) are possible, but come at a cost, then call me to confirm it can be done on a short notice, check with their client and send the car to me.
