Despite the opening ceremony being on Friday the Olympics are underway with Mens Rugby 7s and Football starting yesterday.

New Zealand, Argentina and Fiji look the picks after day 1 with NZ playing really well in both games. France have been really poor and drew with USA and squeaked past Uruguay. It should be a fun couple of days.

I didn't notice it was on. Is there any NZ streaming service dedicated to it?

First thing I noticed the Olympics this morning in the news - Member of Canada women's team coaching staff eight months suspended jail sentence flying a drone over the NZ women's team practice stadium.

Not very sporting. Looks like that got well out of hand.

I am excited for the 7's tomorrow AM.

Pity I need to wait 4 more years for Squash. Just as well, I can entertain myself with real sports like Break Dancing!

Sky have the rights. There are FTA providers offshore.

Sky open [formally Prime] has what they call the gold Channel which runs from 7.30pm till 7.00 am most days and they are showing the opening ceremony live plus other important events i guess where NZ is involved

Eight months suspended jail sentence?

Was it an attack drone?

Controlled airspace so I'd guess the sentence is about the danger to approved aviation

https://www.france24.com/en/europe/20240723-french-security-forces-intercept-six-drones-a-day-near-olympics-sites-pm-says

It was a suspended sentence so not particularly harsh in reality.

Ah, the Summer Olympics. My quadrennial boomer bah humbug phase. It will all be over in a few weeks, thank God.

And jumping into the Seine, you've gotta be insane to do that!

So...the Sevens team's Olympics are all over before the tournament officially opens!

Must be weird to be in the Olympics Team and potentially have the opening ceremony as your last action at the tournament before you're sent home.
I know at FIFA touraments they have to leave the next day after being eliminated. I assume the Olympics are no different.

As one of the team members of a sport that is on early, you'd barely get to enjoy the atmosphere and freebies that come with being an Olympian.
Then there's the surfers, who are on a cruise ship off the Tahitian coast. Not even AT the Olympics as such.

I used to be rivetted to it, not any more, don't actually know why

Seems to be about the biggest and most expensive opening ceremony, and the medal count. Oh, plus the sports too  /s

Perhaps because there are so many new sports these days, in the past there was the long standing sports, then you hit the Track and Field

Oh well, I will watch the golf (ironically) we have a couple of small chances there

skysportnow.co.nz - note there is a non-renewing subscription that runs from July 25 to August 12.

Maybe because you're older and wiser?

I find Olympic/Commonwealth games a total waste of money in general. What's the point of building brand new stadiums to host some activities for a few weeks and then to lay dormant after, like many have?

Had to laugh at the "no sex" cardboard beds for the atheletes while the Olympic Committee will be giving out 300,000 condoms during the games.

Haven't bothered with Olympics since they let professionals in. They really should go back to the days of proper sports, like Tug-of-War, Croquet and Live Pigeon shooting...
