I downloaded a game called Super Stardust HD on to my PS3 from the Sony Store the other day.

The reason for mentioning it is that it is it is the most stunning piece of computer generated visual graphics I have ever seen. A lot of the initial games for the PS3 looked liked they were carry overs from the PS2 but this one is an absolute treat and hopefully the sign of things to come as programmers start to fully utilize the power of the this next generation of  machines.

I've got it running on a  projector  via HDMI from the PS3 and even at 720p its stunning.

Basically the machine has to render hundreds of falling asteroids and a rotating earth and surroundings in real-time, impossible on earlier machines. This is reminiscent of a game called Asteroids I had way back on my Commodore 64 where the space ship was a triangle and the asteroids were polygons, all in monochrome.

It also highlights the better end user experience with the new machines' network capabilities i.e pay for it and download it over the internet, gets stored on the hard drive and plays with little loading delays etc.

You may not believe this, but this game you have downloaded is actually an enhanced version of a game which first appeared on the Amiga back in 1995. I owned it at the time, and it has stuck in my mind as at the time I had never seen anything like it. It was the first game I had seen (certainly on the Amiga) with such amazing 3D graphics. I've found some video of the PS3 version online and you may not believe me but it's not so different from the Amiga version from 12 years ago! The spinning bits of meteor look identical, as does the ship and the laser fire. Great to see Super Stardust still around!!

Here is a link to an article re the 1995 Amiga version: http://www.housemarque.com/game_superstardust.htm

Yeah, I suspected the game might have been around in other versions/machines which explains it's refinement.

On my old (previous version) xbox you would often see a breakdown in the rendering when there was an explosion or complex action scene in a game but this is absolutely flawless.

Just picked up this feed purportedly from Sony NZ saying they could add digital tuner and PVR functionality to PS3 in the future.

I think he's nicked my line about the supercomputer though!
