I think the HD-DVD media area may carry on for longer though ultimately may fade out too.

Well done, a well played 50 mate.

So I guess everyone should buy devices with Blu-ray from now on.

i guess if everyone just bought blu ray then hd dvd will die and the whole world can move on. it feels a bit ridiculous this hd war - the longer it drags on the longer we won't be advancing ...

I just find the whole format "war" thing quite interesting from a socialogical standpoint.

That human instinct to choose a side and root for yours to win seems to be surviving well in the internet age.

I just hope my HD-DVD player lasts long enough to make the (admittedly modest amount of US$178) investment worthwhile. I have about 12 titles at the moment with a few more coming (mainly Star Trek TOS completely remastered with new digital effects). After that I guess will stick with Blu-Ray

And it's official....almost.

"Toshiba has halted production of HD DVD players and recorders and is close to making a decision on whether to throw in the towel on the high-definition movie disc format, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported Saturday evening.

The decision, which NHK said will likely cost the company several tens of billions of dollars, is being made in the face of flagging support by movie studios and major U.S. retailers."

From NHK themselves: http://www.nhk.or.jp/daily/english/dailynews1.html:

Toshiba plans to withdraw from HD-DVD production

Toshiba Corporation has decided to withdraw from next generation high-definition DVD production.

Toshiba has been struggling with its version of the next generation DVD format, as support for Blu-ray technology has spread among US retailers.

Toshiba has been in heated competition with other Japanese electronic giants such as Sony, Panasonic and Hitachi, which produce the high-definition DVD format, Blu-ray.

The Blu-ray format now makes up 90 percent of the Japanese high-definition DVD market after winning last year's price war for DVD recorders and players.

Toshiba faced even more difficulty when the major movie studio, Warner Brothers Entertainment, announced that it planned to use only the Blu-ray format for its movie software.

The company said it will continue to sell HD-DVD products for a while but will stop further development of HD DVD. Meanwhile, it said its DVD factories in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, would be closed.

Market observers said that Toshiba could suffer a loss of hundreds of millions of US dollars.

So it's definite, but coming "soon".

Even Reuters has got it.

EDIT: Another Reuters article which really does say that it's over, by another "source": http://www.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idUSL1643184420080216

Anyone here got a HD-DVD drive for their PC? Inbuilt laptop? Xbox 360 addon?
If so, bad luck it seems.

Actually Toshiba are denying the rumour. It appears to have been started by an over enthusiastic Blu-Ray supporter.
