Gidday,

Due to performance and storage limitations I've been looking at betting a NAS for my Plex back end, but then along came the Plex Cloud server and Amazon Unlimited storage. I'm tempted to try as very cost effective, but have a few questions.

Has anyone got an Amazon Unlimited storage plan in NZ? I cannot find any info on whether it is actually available in our region. This thread seemed to show mixed results. Also, wondering what the bandwidth throughput would be like if it's not hosted in our region, especially when viewing high bitrate streams.

There are a whole lot of hooks and caveats around Amazon Unlimited

"including if we determine that your use violates the Agreement, is improper, substantially exceeds or differs from normal use by other users,"

I would not bet on being able to stash TBs of Movies on it......

Yeah as much as I like the idea of reducing some media storage at home, I'm not sure how you'll get around that fact that collections probably contains some illegally sourced material....and even if it is 100% legal, how would you prove it when they can your account requiring you to re upload it once you've proved it.

Unless it's end ot end encrypted and amazon has no idea what you've stored.

Just reading through the link that @wellygary posted, you're probably better to keep a smaller nas, and try and get access to a bunch of mates using plex for your own private netflix. I'm not sure if other libraries are searchable from yours, or if you can get a consolidated view, but that would be killer.

Hmmm... It seems curious as they have effectively partnered with Plex, which, as an application, may break the terms and conditions of the unlimited storage plan.

I also find the quote curious... " substantially exceeds or differs from normal use by other users" - how can they say it is unlimited, irrespective of what the content is? As a photographer I already have several TB of RAW images I'd want to store there. Sounds very much like a lot of "unlimited" internet plans.

Ah well, I guess a large NAS it is.

Due to our out of date copyright law, chances are the movies are 100% illegal since we aren't allow to RIP DVD s ?

So isn't the only legal movies be ones we made ourselves ?

Unlimited Amazon storage is available in NZ yes I have it. I got it purposely to try out Plex Cloud. You get a free 3 month trial. I've signed up to the Plex clout beta but haven't received an invite yet. I've uploaded just a little content to Amazon just to test it out. Hopefully my invite comes through before Amazon unlimited trial ends.

My synology box downloads my TV shows and can auto sync straight to Amazon cloud.

On paper for me it's perfect.........but the content issue is a sticking point. Will need to see how it pans out.

My question is a little off topic, but how do you find the upload speed to Amazon? I'm getting anywhere between 400kb - 1MBs using their upload tool. (On Gigabit UFB)

Didn't really check the upload speed sorry. I just set it and let it do its thing. I'm on 200/200 UFB. I'll check next time and let you know.

I see your concern though, if you want to get truly on board with this and upload terabytes of media it's going to take a while.

Will also be interesting to see how the actual viewing/streaming of media goes.

Yes but ultraviolet copies are irrelevant in the context of talking about plex - as I doubt it would play them because of the DRM.

Yes but ultraviolet copies are irrelevant in the context of talking about plex - as I doubt it would play them because of the DRM.

I've been buying content from Vimeo recently due to no DRM, then viewing through Plex.

My synology cloud sync doesn't show the sync speed sorry. I can tell you that a 1.2gb TV show file just went in about 6 minutes though. Not to bad. That's with UFB 200/200

Got my Plex cloud invite yesterday. They don't use Amazon unlimited anymore, it wouldn't work for them for whatever reason. They now use Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive.

Set up was a breeze. Up and running in 5 minutes. Streaming no issues over my 200/200 UFB connection.

The cloud server takes a couple of minutes to wake up and get going but after that it's pretty seemeless.

I just uploaded a few test items to Google Drive not everything.

The 2 issues as I see it are not enough storage for a huge library and storing your potentially not legally obtained media.

If there were enough cloud storage for a huge library getting it uploaded could take weeks or months so that will be an issue to. I'm more of a Watch it and delete type so this won't bother me.

I'll see how it goes as it's still beta and mostly stick to my synology for the time being.

Not having an always on machine at home running Plex is great though.
