8600gt in Silverstone LC16M

Does anyone know if there is a nVidia 8600GT series card that will fit in a Silverstone LC16M case? The length limit is 225mm for the card. The only dimensions I could fine were for a Asus silent version at 235mm.

Never mind. I found the answer on the Ascent web site:

"LC16M is not compatible with GeForce 6800 series cards & above"

Dagnabbit...

I had a similar question reference the 9600GT which is meant to be longer than the 8600GT, so I guess I'm out of luck.

To all of those people that have a LC16M Case please enlighten us about what cards you are using/fit. I'm especially interested in a HD capable card that will fit in the restricted space, or maybe some of you have come up with a work around.

Duckquack, think I replyed in your other thread but I can confirm that this card fit's with room to spare and is fine for hardware decoding...

It is also passive so no noise from it at all.

Thanks for the link Nety, but I remember some talk in some other threads about the 8500GT not necessarily having full h.264 hardware support (something about the series of card??). Are you or anyone else able to enlighten us? If this card DOES fit the case and does do full h.264 hardware decoding, then it will be perfect.

Well, i have a passive Gigabyte 8600 GT in my LC16M without trouble at all, and have had it for 3 or 4 months now too. It gets a little tricky putting everything in the case but it certainly fits.

I can confirm the 8500 having full h.264 hardware support, and easily fits within the case.

But it is also true, that other models such as the 8600 can fit within the LC16M...but may require some DIY modifications, and is extremly tight.
The brand you choose will play a big part if you take that path, as while they may all have 8600 models, some have the connections in different places, requiring less space length-wise...being what ya need to fit within the LC16M.

The GF 8500GT has full hardware decoding and it fine, in fact in someways perfect as it uses the least power so is cooler, for a media centre however from what others have said if you want to use your media centre for gaming then the GF 8600GT (or up) is the way to go.

You may have been thinking about the GF 8800GTS which is based on the older GPU.

I did look at the 8400GS however although it claims to do full hardware decoding I found some things that made me shy away from it.

Yeah as mentioned I had to DIY the power plug to fit my 7800GT. I still regret doing so as I now have a mangled plug.

Where did you buy this card from?

Bought it second hand off of Trademe but there was stock of them on Ascent when i was trying to find one.

The 8600GT doesn't require any external power so the connectors aren't really a problem for this card, the biggest problem i can forsee is the cross brace the case has across the top gets very close to the cards heatsink, taking hte brace out however makes the space more than enough. I have the brace in mine though without any fouling.
