I have a DSE Freeview box which I want to plug into a Grandbeing matrix HDMI switcher.

However I am finding that if I have only the DSE box on it works fine, but as soon as I have another device powered up (say PS3) I cannot select the freeview box - the switcher switches to the freeview box and then immediately switches back to say the PS3. If I power off the PS3 it immediately switches to the Freebox at that point. Clearly there is a handshaking issue here

I have been discussing the problem with Rapollo

In the meantime has anyone had any success with using a DSE Freeview box with an HDMI switcher? If so what brand have you been using?

Do you get an HDMI light (usually blue) on your switcher for that input when the the DSE box is conected as well as the PS3? Usually if they are synched correctly the light will show regardless of whether the input is selected.

Make sure you have the PS3 and the DSE Box at the same resolution for your tests eg 720p (and audio settings just in case). It may be that the switcher is selecting the PS3 settings (often switchers use position one source for settings) and then not sycnhing with the DSE Box when they don't match.

Edit: Sorry, on mine the input light is blue only when that input is switched and successfully synched.

No on this model the led only lights up when it is selected. Colour scheme is blue if selected for output 1, red if selected for output 2 and violet if selected for both outputs

Just seen your edit, have you got a grandbeing and a DSE freeview box as well or are you sucessfully using a different switcher?

It is a 4X2 switcher from RapolloAV but it hasn't got a manufacturers name on it and I can't find the spec. sheet at the moment. Probably just a generic make that gets rebadged for different markets. Don't think it's the current one they are selling though.

Don't have the DSE box but run a PS3 and a DVD player into it and they work fine together. That resolution suggestion is just general info I've heard sometimes applies with switches.

I have a DSE Freeview STB and had a Joytech Trilink switch. Couldn’t get anything to work through the switch so returned it. More a reflection of the switch than the STB I hope. I’ll be getting an Oppo switch to see how that goes.

I also have a joytech switch in another room which I have had a PS3, an DVDO Iscan HD+ and a HPTC running through and it worked fine apart from the infra-red extender seems not be very sensitive

I guess I should try the joyech with the DSE and see if it works (although I hate having to undo and do up the system again) to at least confirm whether it is the DSE box or th switcher which is the problem.

I had read about people having problems with HDMI compatibility and didn't understand what the problem was, I obviously had a very good run.

If you have good luck (or otherwise) with the oppo I would love to know. I was in dick smith in the weekend and saw they had a DSE HDMI switcher in the shop now - maybe that is another way - get them to set it up in the shop and see if it works

I have a DSE HD Freeview box plus a Oppo HDMI switch in one room and a Joytech tri switch in another.

I have changed the freeview stb between both and have not had problems with Oppo but the odd issue with the Joytech which I fixed by unplugging the power (same fix used for sky digital after power cut) from TV, STB & Switch. Think it was unplugging switch from power board and replugging that seem to fix it. Had a HDMI DVD plugged into switch at same time but that did not have an issue, just the Freeview STB.

Have now had some temporary success by daisy chaining the joytech with the grandbeing. I have the PS3, netgear and the joytech plugged into the grandbeing (with the only input to the joytech being the DSE freeview unit). This seems to work fine, presumably because the joytech maintains the handshake whilst the DSE unit is switching channels.

Not an elegant solution but workable at the moment. Will be interesting to see what happens with myskyhd when I get that installed in August.

Have been trying to find info on how the Foxtel iQ2 (Australian version of Mysky HDi) handles repeater devices such as splitters and switches. The problem is, like you say, if some work it doesn't mean they all will.

CE manufacturers are supposed to send their HDMI equipment for compliance testing (actually only the first product in a product category) but from what I can tell this is not always happenning and when it does it still produces mixed results.

You can see why it is a nightmare for custom installers.

Further developments.

Changing channels works fine but going to some menu items but not all causes the grandbeing to lose the signal, and going from the guide to a channel causes a loss of signal as well.

I can only presume that changing channels the loss of signal was too quick for the joytech to register so it kept the connection with the grandview long enough for the signal to start again, however for some menu items the loss of signal is slightly longer and means I then have to select the right input again

Rapollo are sending me some additional units to test so this will be interesting

Got the new matrix switcher today (the rapallor branded model) and it works a treat albeit the switching is a little bit slower than the grandbeing but it works. Able to have the freeview, PS3 and netgear in the room and independent switchng of sources in the two rooms. Hopefully will continue to work well when MySkyHD arrives.

As an aside also bought the oppo unit for the home theartre system (don't need a matrix switch) and it works beautifully

A convulted process but got there in the end, with thanks to Murray from Rapallo

That 4X2 switch is the one I've got and it works very well. Possibly the only thing I might question is if it could support deep color at 1.65 G/bits but being labelled HDMI 1.3 doesn't mean it actually has to support all the features of the HDMI 1.3 standard

. Not that many would utilise deep color I might add.

Have been looking on the Australian DTV forum at the introduction of the Foxtel iQ2 satellite box and the reports seem to be that while the box originally had some problems linking to HDMI switches etc, that a series of firmware upgrades seem to have solved most of them. Hopefully our My Sky HDi box will have the benefit of these improvements.
