Hi guys

Could someone please inform me of the connector the new Sony LCDs with integrated MPEG4 HD Digital Tuner use to take the feed from the UHF?

F or good 'ol Belling-Lee? or something else?

I presume this also means back to the days of 'tuning' in channels?

I imagine its the standard aerial plug since it just runs off UHF and has an analogue/digital tuner.

I would also expect that it simply scans the frequencies for the channels.

The Official NZ standard on these matters states that the correct connector for V/UHF terrestial signals is Bellinglee, thats includes FreeView DTT. That said I never use them as they are mechanically not good, but expect to find them on all DTT STBs and iDTVs.

I expect you will find the Sony iDTV (and others) will be fully compliant mheg5 models, hence will be preprogrammed for the default NZ transmissions, and will update tuning and firmware over air, so basically you should not have to tune too much it should sort itself.

I have just purchased a Sony KDL40W4000.

Yes, it takes the standard aerial connection so no dramas there.

The tuning is pretty much plug and play. Just hit the button and it will automatically scan for all the analogue and digital signals it can pick up. Then it is a matter of simply shuffling through the channels to make sure they are numbered how you like them.

Can the new sonys output dolby 5.1 to an amp?

Just a new tv I purchased (a few months ago) had digital out but to my surprise was only two channel. I have a seperate freeview decoder so hooked sound direct to amp. With built in one be a blow if it doesn't output 5.1 from TV.

We have got our 32" W series running off a uhf antenna sitting in the house, its a 91 element so its getting moved outside tomorrow.
Freeview HD looks very nice, though yet to see any true HD stuff.
There is an optical digital out on the back of the tv which we are going to run to a home theatre system, so im hoping it will give out sound even on the non dolby channels.

Anyone who gets freeview HD - make sure that your antenna cable runs RG6 cable all the way to the TV. We ran the standard aerial cable for 2m and you can't pick up any freeview channels at all. Replaced this with RG6 and it worked perfectly. We thought the antenna was out of line.

I have a Digital Optical Out cable running from the TV to my Amp which gives 5.1ch sound but currently only from TV3 which on my set is the only channel broadcasting in this format.

No. What I am saying is that TV3 is the only channel that I recieve as a 5.1 format. All others are in 2ch of different formats, according to the onscreen banner that pops up each time you change channel.

I suggest the Sony iDTVs work like anyother STB, there is normally a menu selection to enable passing the DD/AD3 stream out the spdif port if it exists for the viewed channel, othewise it will output a decoded PCM stream of the HE-AAC stream.

Yeah thats what i was asking, i wasnt sure if we would only be able to put tv3 to the sound system because it was the only one with dolby.
As soon as our 10m optical cable arrives it'll be working good.
