Have a sony KD-75X9000H TV connected to an Onyko TX-NR509 via eArc.  The sound keeps dropping out for a fraction of a second every 30-40 seconds on both TV and other inputs.  Same happens whenever I adjust sound volume both via Onyko or the TV.

This seems to have started after I was playing around with inputs to sort some casting (Apple airplay) issues.  Any ideas ?

Yes I’ve restarted both TV and AVRx.

perhaps go for the simple option first and replace the HDMI from the TV to your Onkyo. I had a similar problem from my Sony OLED to my Integra Receiver and a decent Dynamix cable from PB Tech fixed the dropout issue.

Common problem with eARC on some current TVs back to about 2020. Various fixes depending on the root cause. It's your firmware up to date across all devices?

Yah, change of HDMI cable has fixed the issue.  Why it stopped working after several years is a mystery.

Now to crack the inconsistent airplay issues.

HDMI cables (particularly at the cheaper end of the spectrum) are notoriously poorly built and as the cables slowly twist / untwist over time, the connections at the termination points can loose continuity... hence the failures people endure.
