I have a 65" LG Oled TV from 2016. Now my kids are older and unreliable it has got a fairly serious amount of burn in.

It's unrepairable now unfortunately.

So I'm looking for a replacement. Due to kids use I'm going to steer away from OLED and thinking about a low to mid-range sort of unit.

We have an Xbox Series X so keen on 120hz and VRR, but man in the lower to midrange specs are impossible to actually find.

Looking at:

TCL C745 QLED Gaming TV | TCL Global

TCL C745 75" 4K Full Array QLED Google TV | JB Hi-Fi (jbhifi.co.nz)

Which has qled and vrr, so seems legit. Has 'local and micro' dimming whatever that is.

Or this:

75" ULED Mini-LED Series U7KNZ - Hisense New Zealand

Hisense 75" U7KNZ ULED Mini-LED 4K Smart TV [2023] | JB Hi-Fi (jbhifi.co.nz)

Which for $500 more also has mini led which should be great for blacks.

Opinions?

Just one thought about going OLED again with that last link, while it'll have perfect blacks that'll make all the other colours look better, it lacks HDR support. Just one factor to consider.

What makes you say that - spec page says it has HDR10+ and Dolby Vision: OLED 4K UHD OLED Android TV 65OLED706/79 | Philips

Apologies! It was the details at the top of PB Tech's page, it says HDR Compatible: No but I should have looked at the specs yes. You're quite right it does have HDR support.

Although I understand HDR on OLED's is difficult because they don't reach the brightness levels of other displays ( https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/01/how-will-2023-tvs-address-oleds-biggest-flaws/ ). But some sets last year and this year are getting brighter and brighter, so brightness has certainly been a focus for OLED TVs lately. I'm not sure how bright or not the Philips TV can go, but it's great that it supports the formats :)

Yeah - TBH we have noticed the existing OLED not being great in the middle of the day. I wonder if that's what has caused some of the burn in issue - brightness being too high.

I have similar needs and budget so I'd be keen to hear what you went for in the end (and if you're happy with it?)

Ended up not buying.

Couldn't see a demo of the Phillips TV's, and when I went to have a look at the Hisense, the model up TCL (75" C845 Mini LED 4K Google TV - TCL Electronics) absolutely blew it away, and was only $500 more. Buth then you are looking at branded OLED territory as well......

Honestly it got a bit hard, and really unless scenes are super red the burn in isn't so noticeable.

So decided to wait and see if I could get a deal over Christmas/had more time to look.

I have a TCL, its an utter POS.   About 4 years old, would never buy one again.  75" model.   The colors have started fading, reds are very orange now.  Takes 2 minutes to turn on.   Stay clear of TCL

If you wait until the end of Nov,all the retailers have their Black Friday sales which could net you a good deal on a new TV.

Sony 77" A80J OLED, Integra 60.7, Panasonic UB820, Toshiba HD-XE1, Apple TV 4K, JBL L100T,JBL 18Ti, JBL L20T, Velodyne HGS15

Was it a qled model?
Interesting, they get pretty good reviews now, but that doesn't take into account longevity.

I have the 65 version of the Philips Mini LED TV, generally happy enough with it, although I do find shadow detail a bit lacking with HDR (especially from Primevideo app). Can get a bit ghosty watching cricket / golf on sky sport now app when following the ball, but for 90% of what we use it for, its a good TV

Yeah I'll also wait for the black Friday sales.

The TCL I was looking at is this one https://www.jbhifi.co.nz/tcl/tcl-65-c845-4k-uhd-mini-led-qled-google-tv-2023/424911/

Vincent at HDTVtest has reviewed it and recommend it https://youtu.be/HylMkGKTycE?si=60XfM0TcT3nEU9ov

Hardware seems pretty excellent but I've never owned TCL...

Apparently TCL SD upscaling is not great (doesn't bother me) and there are some model specific issues with local dimming (people are waiting for a firmware fix since the issue is HDR content only, not SDR)

I can't live with ghosting/crappy movement but could forgive some picture quality exceptions if they are limited. My budget is <$3k for 65"

Interesting. Is it the motion smoothing that causes it, or display refresh times do you think? I Imagine if display refresh time HFR gaming ghosting may be a similar issue then.

I find Prime video to be severely lacking when it comes to shadow detail even on my oled. Netflix looks much better.

How bright is it? After seeing the C845 TCL vs the Hisense in the store it was night and day difference, which is the main reason I really wanted to see this one.

I have a 43" P725 which is "OK", Android TV is quite sluggish and the picture is kind of average. I also recently purchased a 50" P745 which runs Google TV and is night and day different to the older P725, the picture and responsiveness is pretty decent for the price. (Used for a kids gaming TV)
