Hi there. I was not sure where to post this, so please move it to where it belongs.

Since about 2017/2018 (after moving to NZ) my TV started showing black smudges. I didn't worry too much about it. Now recently, it decided to start showing me blue smudges. I don't know if this is repairable or not. Any advice would be helpful to try and fix the issue. It's a Samsung 55KU7000

For reference. I played a white screen video from youtube.

Yep - backlights.

An 8 year old TV and who fixes TVs these days - can you even find anyone - maybe a possible DIY project?

Have a look on youtube for Samsung backlight replacement - they fail a lot.

Very common issue unfortunately.

Try and find your model or something similar on youtube.

Doesn't look all that difficult to do yourself (usual warnings about electricity etc) - but depends a bit on the model and how they stuck it together - some are literally glued - some are clipped or screwed.

Aliexpress has lots of parts - Lots of the youtube repairers get their parts from Aliexpress. The strips will be made in China anyway. A complete new set of lights looks to be around $35 to $50

EDIT: Is this your TV?:

Certainly looks that way!! Thanks a lot!! Wow, everyone needs a friend like you. I am seriously considering trying to fix it. The backlight strips are $52. This will be the smaller TV (I accidentally bought another TV a week ago)

Just make absolutely certain that the replacements exactly match what your TV needs, in other words pop the back off and look at the part number rather than going with the TV model number.  Manufacturers have a habit of swapping out components whenever something slightly better/cheaper/more readily available comes along without changing the device model number.

Thanks for the advice!

Looks like it could be a nice little project....

Just take your time - Find as many videos as you can on opening it up - you often get some good tips on how NOT to break it.

Be verrrry careful (remember capacitors can hold high voltage charge for quite a while).

In that video above, you just dont go touching the components on the 2 boards in the TV.

Worst case - you completely wreck it, learn a bit and waste $50.

Best case - you look like a hero, learn a bit and have a fixed TV.

PS: Post an update on what you find out - either way - Always interesting to know what happened.

I just finished putting it back together again. Only 2 clips broke off the bezel, but it seems solid enough after reassembly.

I kinda forgot about the capacitors, but thanks for reminding me.

I think I found the part numbers. But I need to search and find out. The 40099A and 40100A seems to be lining up with part numbers I saw earlier today.

BN96-39659A-60A-12
BN96-39659A
BN96-39660A
BN96-40099A
BN96-40100A
BN96-40097A
BN96-40098A

The BN96 part throws me a bit. But I am sure it will be the bold parts (I think they come in pairs). When removing the plastic sheet which covers the backlights, 3 of the little diffusers came loose. When I switched on the TV, I saw 3 distinct spots where they were previously. I could probably have hot-glued it, but it is not worth it if I am going to replace it later.

My phone refuses to print the QR codes (Invalid intent) - whatever that means. So if you or anyone here can scan and tell me what it says, I would be grateful.

And no spare parts after reassembly - that's always a plus - hahaha

That's not a QR code, it's a matrix code widely used on electronic parts, so you'd need software that can read data matrix codes.

Edited to add: This handy online tool tells me it says "TMA1L157655U551LY0099A" for the first one, "TMA1R158355U551LY0100A" for the second one, and "If you can read this you don't need glasses" for the third one.

Good job getting in there and seeing the actual LED strips!

Hang onto those difuser thingies - People often seem to use a bit of glue to stick them back...

You said "It's a Samsung 55KU7000" - I think there will be a couple of extra letters at the front of that.

e.g. UN UA - or something like that. Maybe searching for the LED strips using the extra digits may help narrow it down?

I made contact with a supplier at AliExpress. I showed him the photographs - he advised the correct set. It's a UA55KU7000KXXA

@Brend - Awsome - Proud of you!

EDIT: Makes you wonder how many go into landfills when $30 or $40 and a little time could fix them up.
