Thanks for your help so far in setting up my system. Everything set up and picture is fabulous - I have an issue with the centre speaker and am keen to identify if it is indeed that or something else.

Have the typical 5.1 setup. Sub fed through LFE output, 2 fronts and 1 center and 2 rears.

Ran a test signal through them and everything had a similar deep woosh through each speaker and Sub rumbled apart from the centre speaker which kind of hissed a bit. Thought it odd but pushed on.

Used the function on the Yamaha receiver to setup the speakers and it keeps telling me the centre speaker is not outputting at the same level as the others and move it to within 24 metres of the microphone :)

I've tried the center speaker in other ports on the wall for front left and right and it appears the same on the test signal - a hiss and no apparent midrange so I think I've confirmed the wiring is okay. I also rewired a new cable into the back of it to confirm I hadn't screwed that up.

Ran a few bluray movies through and on standard mode on the receiver which is basic film mode, the dialog from the centre speaker is whisper quiet, sounds tinny and is massively drowned out by the effects from front L&R. Dialog is barely audible and appears to be coming out of tweeter only. The two midranges that sit alongside the tweeter dont appear to being used.

Took speaker back to Harveys who plugged it into a dvd player and it worked !??!!? until I put a bit of pressure on the thumbscrew plate at which point all the treble disappeared and it only had bass. This was repeatable by a few of them so they happilly swapped it out.

I've not tried it out yet but given it appeared to be displaying the complete opposite problem to what I saw ( no bass and all treble) ,if I plug it in and still get the same issues, whats the next best steps to identify the problem issue ?   Could it be the receiver for example?

Thanks

You are on the right steps - you could take one of your rears and plug it into the centre just to confirm that the centre channel is outputting it's expected range, and hasn't been damaged by the originally faulty centre speaker.

Just as a note, I also ran Yamahas YMPO ( or whatever it is called) a couple of times. Make sure the mic is at ear level at YOUR normal listening position. Even putting it on the seat of a lazyboy or other such highly acoustically absorbent furniture will make a significant difference. Ideally, setup a photographic or telescope tripod to bring the mic to ear level. If you slouch / recline when you normally watch movies, make sure the mic is at that position. There is a significant difference if the mic is just above the back rest if you are sitting up straight-ish, as compared when you have reclined, your ears are now a few inches below the back rest, and you now have a few inches of sound absorbing foam between the rears and your ears.

I did find I had to bring up the volume of my centre a tad to balance it out with the fronts, but that was my preference.

Don't stress too much too early either.  Sounds like the last one one had a genuine mechanical fault so it may all be fine now too with the new replacement...

Lots of speakers come with a bi wire input and some metal straps between the high and low, and when you put a wire in the hole there isnt enough pressure on the strip to get a good connection.

IMO its a ploy to sell overpriced useless biwire cables since thats the only way to really get a good connection to both halves of the terminal block.

Aint that the truth !!

Mixing both speaker wire and the strap ends up with minimal contact area on the strap itself. And then vibrates. Fun trying to find that "buzz". Only happens at certain frequencies. Running a very slow sliding audio scale from the PC certainly helped to track it down.

Couple of speakers I have "fixed" needed to daisychain the speaker wires to both sets of speaker terminals. PITA.

Or you try and screw them down firmly, and the entire speaker binding post spins around in its hole, and busts the internal speaker connection from the binding post.

About time consumer speakers put speakons on them IMO. Mind you, would kill the $20 spade connector market that the stores must love.

It would appear to have been the speaker at fault after all.

Connected the new one and immediately heard what I wanted.   Yamaha amp did its thing and now room sounds amazing...Really amazing...

Thanks again.
