Hi, I am looking at replacing my Xbox 360 in the lounge and wanted to replace it with a HTPC. But I also want to record TV shows from Freeview HD. I was wondering if the Atom D510 with Core AVC with deblocking turned off to save on cpu load will still record Freeview HD. I have Heard you can play 1080p H.264 on the Atom D510 with deblocking turned off but not sure if it would be able to record though. Could any one confirm this and also confirm playing 1080p H.264 video? Doesn't need to be blu-ray bit rate sence I won't be using blu-ray. But the reason I did not want to go with some think like the sempron 140 with 785g is because it uses a lot more power and this system will be running 24/7 and the Atom is also fan less.

Any feedback or recommendations will help

That might be pushing it. I can just play 720P H264 with CoreAVC on my Atom N270. I can't do 1080i/p at all.

The D510 is dual core (with HT) though, so you might be lucky. I wouldn't think you'll be able to do anything else on the system while you're playing it though.

I agree with the above. You won't be able to do anything else while it's recording. Make sure there are not many processes / apps running in the background.

I did a lot of reading on the atom's before purchasing one - as far as HD content is concerned the conclusions were don't bother unless it's dual core (or the atom version of it) paired with the nvidia chipset. In NZ at the moment I think this pretty much means a zotac board. SOME content will be ok on the Intel boards, but it sounds all a bit hit and miss.

Read the reviews over at silentpcreview - they do head to head with a few atom variants.

Oh Thanks I forgot about Silentpcreview. I found a review for the D510 on that site and on this page http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1010-page4.html the D510 only used 53% on rush hour of the cpu what is a 10mbps h.264 video which freeview hd is only around 8mbps correct me if im wrong because it was a long time ago I read about that lol. I think the D510 will do the job I need easy. Even if recording does require more power ill just have to put the tv card in main pc and record with that and then transfer it to the Atom system which will work also.

I'd seriously doubt that the processor itself would work well decoding H.264 content.

D510 boards however are more than capable of doing this - if you buy a board with a mini PCIe slot there are hardware GPU cards available that handle all the decoding.

i have to say anecdotally freeview HD is a major power guzzler. it wont run 1080p on windows 7 media center on my 2GHz core 2 duo GMA4500HD. my system can however play uncompressed 1080p h.264 clip with 30-50% CPU load. go figure freeview HD. if you still insist ... good luck! you have been warned!

PS i have no idea (and thus have not factored in) about coreAVC - what's that?!

The only problem with the stock D510 boards is the digital video ports are limited to a maximum resolution of 720p, and the only port that can output full HD is the analog CRT port. If HD is needed with Atom the ION processor is still the best option.

I think I might just get the sempron with the 785g (hd4200) the idle is only about 8ish watts higher than a Atom system but uses about 80 watt under load. I could always under volt it to and plus I the extra core might be stable for an unlock and it doesn't really seem to drive up the wattage much when the seconded core is enable. this is what ive read in reviews though. Plus it has hdmi so blu-ray is an option now sence it with have HDCP.

Yes but they cost around $300 nzd and i can get sempron 140 and 785g for slightly under $200

Coreavc is just a codec and it also enables hardware decoding. I have used ffdshow and coreavc and found core is a little faster. I don't have a hardware decoding capable gfx so I can't comment on that. If you get a mother board with onboard gfx and hardware decoding you can run freeview HD fine, even with an Atom.

Personally I'm not a big fan of ATi graphics cards for HD decoding, hear all kind of problems. In my opinion you are better off with an Nvidia GPU.
