Hey all,

I have had issues with my Mediaportal -version 1.1.1.0- not saving the full, listed double episodes of Vampire Diaries & NCIS. Only the normal length (pre record + the programme + 10minute post record) was recorded. Even though they were highlighted to record the full {double} programme in the guide.

Before I post the issue? on the MP forums, was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

Have been able to view the Vampire Diaries on TV2's video-on-demand site, but TV3's one resets NCIS back to the start after the first ad break: very frustrating. Thanks.

I don't think mediaportal will change its recording for double episodes (even though it shows on the epg as set) it basically is always set to record from time A to time B when you set it to record a show every week, You will have to delete the recording from the schedule (in My TV) and set a new recording that covers the double episodes from the epg.
You may want to investigate the mediaportal plugin “for the record” this has more advanced recording features – it can monitor a show and adjust the recording if it starts later or earlier (I don’t know about double episodes but it should adjust the recording based on the show name)
“FortheRecord” also features a internet access system so you can set & check programs to record on you htpc through a web browser via the internet.

A warning though - backup mediportal before installing “FortheRecord” because it overrides a lot of mediaportal’s recording and my tv functions

Have you set it to record at a select time or on a show basis, or this show on this channel at this time every week?  Mine definately recorded the double episode of The Mentalist last night and both the 1 & 2 hour Americas got Talent.  I always have it record per show rather than time - easier to manually unselect the repeats late at night than forget to set it properly.

Eww really? Start time to end time? Really, this isn't the 80s and the days of VCRs. T

his is the whole point of a PVR - that your recordings are programme based not time based. So if the recording changes time (within reason) and length that it will automatically pick it up.

Thanks for the replies.

Firstly, my system has picked up extended double episodes in the past, as I always set the advanced record section to "record every week at this time." Rather than "Record every time on this channel," as this, then picks up older episodes replayed at the later hours, eg. NCIS is also on a Wednesday  late evening. the only time this is an issue is with sports events that run into overtime eg. extra time during the soccer World Cup. These had to be manually adjusted.

@askelon -I'm not sure what you mean by "show basis?" I nearly always set my programme records via the EPG. The only real exception is the news, where I have a manual record to pick up the sports section.

Given this Countries ability to have their TV programmes broadcast behind the scheduled times (though, this has markedly improved in recent years), I always have a default of pre-record for 2 minutes & a post-record for 10 minutes.

Except a VCR doesn't have a 7 eday epg you can select shows to record from and all the other benefits of a htpc.
This is one of the current limitations of mediaportal you can set it to record a show every week but what it is really doing is recording from time A to Time B every week at that time, if the epg changes ie show changes it still records but the recording will match the name of the show on the epg (this can be a good thing when the naming of the show is ramdomly changed in the epg by the broadcaster ie "All new Mentalist" - "mentalist" etc
Mediaportal is free international htpc software & because there are many ways of obtaining the epg and they vary to how much data is contained in the epg itself ie show ids etc and i don't think show ids are included in the freeview dvb-s epg (not that i can find) this limits what mediaportal can do.

The best option is "For the Record" which integrates into mediaportal and has a much more advanced recording method - it looks at the name of the show in the epg and adjust the recording time to match.
Hopefully mediaportal will one day add this feature. (I don't know if changes in the epg like "All New ..." will confuse For the record)

Are you sure it hasn't recorded the 2hr episode because you previously had the show & the following show set to record?

Oh, can I add the obligatory GBPVR can do this. :D

I just assumed all software based PVRs would do this as it's the big plus over VCRs and even things like the Panasonic BluRay recorder which originally ignored the EPG (it was viewable but not usable for recording porposes).

Yes GBPVR will adjust the rec time if the epg time moves but GBPVR has issues if the name of the show on the epg changes, if it can't find the show with-in a set time window it won't record anything - really annoying.
I’ve had this happen recording off sky using gbpvr a few times (sledge hammer was listed as the episode name on the epg instead of sledge hammer!).
sky is also really bad at giving correct times on its epg, I’ve missed the end of so many shows because the show started late or was longer than listed in the epg.
This a couple of draw backs of using htpc's & the unreliability of the epg data (off of dvb-s)

I have 2 HTPC's
one using GBPVR and a pvr150 card to record sky from a set top box (using the pvr150 ir sender to automatically change channels)
And another HTPC running Mediaportal to record Freeview off the satellite

Yes that is the one issue with it being tied to the name - that our EPG data is not all that reliable (I don;t know how many times I've missed the wifes Shorty St cos on Mondays they call it Shortland St Omnibus) but in GBPVR there are ways around this...

On with the OP....

I'm wondering if in the previous instances where I remember it recording double episodes, it was in the days when I used XMLTVNZ (which captured the data from DVB-T), instead of EPG Collector?

As far as i'm aware Mediaportal only uses the epg data for naming the recordings, that's why you can get a "manual" recording if the show time changes in the epg or if a series finishes it will still record but name the new recording with the name of the new show if it starts at the same time)
Even if you schedule mediaportal to record a show using the epg using "same time every week" it still only sets it record from time A to B and will name the recording based on the epg data.

Is there chance that previously you had set the recording from the epg when the show was listed as 2hrs long?

Best thing to do with mediaportal is use the record every week at this time (I use pre & post rec of 10min) but check the epg often and if a show changes chancel the recording and set a new one.

My wife is really good at checking the epg everyday (she doesn't like to miss shortland street either :)

Mediaportal is great piece of software but you have to work within its limitations (and unfortunately discover them and work around them :)

some of you guys should look at the For the record plugin for MP/TV Server, it does what you want, its recording system is miles better than the default tv server

it recorded  those double episodes for me

for example your Wife, you could just set a rule that records anything in the title "shortland" any time on any channel, the variable list goes on - problem solved

I dont think MP should have recorded those double episodes by default because it wouldnt have matched any of the rules you originally set

An example is Two and a Half Men, it seems to be on 3-4 times a week, you would need to set a recording for it in each timeslot in MP, sometimes its called "All New Two and a Half Men" as well,

in FTR, you would just set record any show whos title contains "Two and a Half Men" anytime

Yes the recording rule stuff is cool. I just can't stand the niggly differences from the default TV plugin...
Installed and uninstalled again twice :)

My default install of MP 1.2.0 Alpha picked up the double episodes of Chuck, 2&1/2 Men and the Mentalist no worries.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Had a look at 4 The Record. Once I had installed it, I lost the use of my MCE remote "Recorded TV & Guide" buttons. Have reverted back to default & haven't had a chance to delve into it, at this stage. Probably over Xmas, when I am most likely going to upgrade my client HTPC's specs.
