Hi All

I think it has come down to the choice of 2 tvs

Samsung LA40d550
LG 42LK450

both around the same price, the Samsung seems to have a better picture in the 2 shops that I have seen it in
But know that dosent mean a lot?

A little about what I watch etc

It will be in a bright room on the wall, we have Myskyhdi but not the HD ticket
80% of watching time is just FTA tv
20% is watching sport league/rugby etc
We dont really watch DVDs etc

My old TV is a 29inch CRT so a big move up for us.

I like what I have read about the LG but a little concerned about the panel lottery, is that an issue in NZ?
as the product codes dont match a good or a bad panel?

Any opinions would be great, an have I missed a TV I should have a look at in the same price bracket?

They're both older (and I believe discontinued) model CCFL backlit models.
I'd at least be looking for an LED backlit model.

I don't think there is any point in taking a panel lottery because low end LCD tech is nasty. But personally, I wouldn't buy a Samsung TV.

That LG model only does 60Hz maximum. Large LCDs without 100 / 120Hz motionflow stutter alot, although some LCDs look almost as bad with it turned on.

Be sure to plug mySkyHDi in to the new Tv via HDMI and not composite. You should have the new TV plugged into the aerial if you're in the Freeview|HD area.

Correct. Often there is an inverse relationship with how good a television looks in the shop and how good it looks at home. But the difference you may be seeing may be down to that LG model's lack of motionflow.

It'd be worth paying for the HD ticket if you use Sky to watch Sky Sports or are outside the Freeview|HD broadcast area.

As an aside, both the LG and Samsung's are 50Hz... it's just that the Samsung range attempt to confuse things by listing their TV's as CMR 100Hz or similar. They have their own reasons, but effectively, they (along with Sony) are just trying to fudge the figures.

Personally, I prefer the LG's. Better panels (IPS) and easy to calibrate with their very convenient Picture Wizard. Sure it's not 100Hz, but it's a nice tellie for the $'s in my books.

I don't know those models, but I have a 3 year old 40" 720p Samsung LCD and a six month old 55" Samsung LCD, I really like them. The newer, bigger one is obviously better, 1080p.

LED backlight is nice, but not essential, the CFL ones can be a bunch cheaper.

Got the LG in the end, got a great price from Harvey Norman.
Very happy with the TV watched the Warriors and the AB's and to say im happy is an understatement.
