hi guys,
i have just bought a laptop that had a modem and is bluetooth wifi capable etc

as i am looking to get an internet connection i was wondering if anyone had any advice as to which would be the best way to go

dial up
broadband
wireless etc

not sure but i think it might be hard to set up a wireless connection???
i think broadband seems like the best option as its much faster the dial up and not that much more expensive
any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Are you talking about wireless connection as in Wi-Fi? If so, don't worry - first it's easy to setup. Second it will not replace your broadband, but complement it.

You sign up with a broadband provider and then install a router at home. In my case I have a Wi-Fi/Wired router. This way I have my two desktop computers connected directly via cable, which gives me very fast and stable connection between them, but I also have my tablet PC connecting via Wi-Fi, so I can work upstairs, or use my Pocket PC when not in the little cubicle, er, office, at home...

Depending on where you live you have the option of using a wireless broadband provider, such as Woosh. This is nice because it gives you more flexibility when it comes to layout at home - no need to have a router close to the wall where the cable comes out.

I use cable modem from TelstraClear, but this is only available in some places. The most common broadband offering is xDSL from Telecom, through many ISPs in the country.

im flatting in dunedin at the moment so broadband should be available?
also one of my flatmates is on the internet quite a bit, not sure if he is dial up or broadband, but would that stop me from being able to use a broadband connection at the same time as him?

Dunedin should have DSL services available. You can check on the Telecom website, by entering your phone number and it will tell you if the service reaches your flat. You then have to find an ISP you like.

If your flatmate is already using Internet ask him what's the deal. If it's a dial-up account it would be cheaper (if sharing the cost) to use a broadband connection.

If you install a router then you can use it at the same time as anyone else in the house. That's how I have four computers here and a couple of Pocket PCs, all connected...
