Hi Folks

IS there a knack to hooking up to the Telecom free WiFi network?   I have a SGSII and I've been trying to unsuccessfully connect to a phone box WiFi downtown.  Phone says signal is strong  (I'm about 5 meters way)  wizzes away saying" obtaining IP address" and then gives up and says" unable to connect" and that's it.  What could I be doing wrong?  I never normally have any issues connecting to WiFi.

Can you connect at any other telecom AP "phonebox"?

Given that it is still school Holidays I suspect that Telecom's free Wifi could be taking a hammering from a certain demographic, particularly in large towns/cities and other areas where teens frequent.

Or you can flick me an email with the exact location of the phone box and perhaps it's a bit borked.. so I can forward it onto the wifi folks to get them to send someone out to fix that one box. "pl at telecom.co.nz" is me...

There's a map at http://www.telecom.co.nz/coverage that might help :)

I can hardly ever connect to the hotspot at 178 Queen Street in Auckland, with the same Obtaining IP address message.  Don't have a problem with others most of the time.

Has anyone connected to an openVPN server using Telecom Free WiFi? I can connect to one using mobile data, but not the free wifi.

That just sounds like the issue Android seems to have with open networks. I find you have to forget the network, turn wifi off/on, then it will reconnect.

Hmmm, I did forget it a couple of times and re scanned all with similar results.  I'll try your suggestion next time.  Thank you

I had a similar issue a couple of times with Koru Club login.
Seemed to settle after I rebooted / turned off /on, then seemed to be fine from then on.

Once you have activated wifi and connected to the telecom hotshot you need to go to your browser and register accepting their t&c then you should be good to go. If it happens again when you are in range and connected in your wifi scene try going into your browser again to see if you need to login again, sometimes you need to do this if it is a new day. At least that had happened to me once but recently once I had registered the first time after connecting I had no issues.

Three questions

1) Can we request phoneboxes to be considered to be made into APs? Theres one from the trial in raglan, but further down the street theres a second booth that is right in the heart of the busy part of town.
2) Is EAP-SIM on the cards?
3) Can you please paint the older ones with the "dome" APs that were part of the trial (not the hanging down newer APs) as a TARDIS? The dome would make a perfect flashing light. Make the the phone ring randomly with the ringtone of the engines for extra credit.

While I like the idea of this free wifi, it can get pretty annoying when you are connected to one for a fleeting moment as a passenger in the car. Sometimes the connection is so far away that it simply renders it useless. I often turn off my wifi to avoid this. First world problems I guess!
