I've been staying with a few people for the past few months (around the Howick region in Auckland), with sub-average speeds on a ADSL2+ capable line/router (decent for the age/state of the house, I guess; around 7down/0.7up Mb/s at 40-50ms is what the place usually had since Dec) but over the past two days the quality of the connection has plummeted dramatically.

The following tests are made from a computer connected directly to the router via. ethernet cable.





There was a brief period early in the morning (around 6AM) when the lag subsided, but otherwise the above speedtest +pingtest is the speeds I've been getting as of most recently.
I do a bit of online gaming, so as you can imagine (with the latency involved) it's proven to be a bad experience/impossible to play at all.

Is there any suggestions as to what I can do on my end to fix or alleviate these problems given I'm not the property owner or the account holder for the internet?

Edit: I was poking around and noticed that (while everyone was asleep) the Wifi light was flickering, so I turned off the Wifi from the router and suddenly...


Relatively normal speeds!
I'll probably ask around and check up on all the wireless devices connected to the network and see if there's any problems related to malware.

If anyone could suggest anything I could do to make the net a bit faster though, that would also be appreciated.
