Does anyone have any strong recommendations on an alternative router for a Spark UFB business connection? I'm helping out a friend who has one in his business, and the Spark provided HG659b keeps dropping the route for their DVRs port forwarding - because the DVRs don't talk to the DHCP server it seems. Tried the latest firmware, and basically he's fed up and just wants to replace it.

Currently using the wireless on the router so wireless capability is desired, although I could set him up with separate components if needed.

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

 


 

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- If you are rural or urban

 


 

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

 


 

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

 


 

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

 



 

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

 



 

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Without really providing some basic requirements it's very hard to answer that.

What I will say however is that setting up port forwards to a DVR is exceptionally poor from a security perspective and isn't something that should be done.

I agree - a separate conversation I'm having with him, to see if he can move to a VPN for that. In not sure if the iPhone app for it plays nicely - the one good thing I have done is be able to lock it down with authentication and to just the app port rather then the web interface.

With the requirements - it's a fibre UFB install on the 100/50 plan, with about 10 pcs in the office off a gigabit switch, and some wireless n devices hanging off too - that about covers the requirements.
