I am looking at purchasing a second Telecom mobile to use in conjunction with my Treo 700wx. There are times when I don't want or need to carry my Treo around and a simple phone will do.  This leads me to a couple of questions:

With the Tandem service, will calls made and SMS sent from the second mobile show up as coming from the same number the Treo is connected to, or will it be a separate number?
If separate number, is there a way to have two phones on the one number with incoming calls/SMS going to both phones at the same time and showing the one number on outgoing calls/SMS, regardless of which phone is used?

I hope this make sense. Basically I don't want to confuse anyone in my phone book by sending an SMS from the second phone for example and having it come up with a random number they won't be familiar with.

The tandem service cost $9.95 per month (excl GST) and shares the same benefits as the primary line.

Your tandem will have a secondary number, and calls made to the primary will be diverted to the secondary number, if the primary number is switched off, on a call or just busy. TXT messages how ever will arrive only at their intended destination (i.e. the number they are sent to) and as such there is no way to divert txt messages, or make them appear as if they had been sent from another number (i.e. the primary number).

Calls made from the secondary (tandem) will display on the receviers caller display as the secondary (tandem number), the same is true of the primary (primary number will display on caller display).

Both handsets will need to have a different number - check out http://www.telecom.co.nz/tandem for more info

A few thing to note are calls made to the primary phone divert to tandem if unanswered, but calls to the tandem phone do not go to the primary if unanswered- they just go to voicemail. I did a lot of playing when I first got tandem to see what it can do.

A great thing about tandem is fact both phones share the primary's service, eg if primary is on 500 texts and flexi mytime, then the tandem can send texts or make calls, and it is deducted from the primary's 500 texts/"free" minutes.

But one funny thing is *333 works for primary, but doesn't for tandem, so to find out texts/balance, etc needs to be done from primary phone.

I usually have a flash phone on primary which is too precious to take out (lol), so i use a cheaper one while out, on tandem, so i can text or make/recieve calls and it comes off primary service without the worry of getting primary all broken.

So a couple who dont make many calls/texts could probably get away with 1 phone on contract with a tandem connected, and have one each and "share" the calls and texts per month, and can call each other with them.

This service also means you could give people your tandem number if you dont really want to give your number out, because then they can contact you, but dont find out your primary number.
