Same old story and i should be able to sort it but im going round in circles!

Can anyone advise a freeware/shareware program that will report what is actually going on that's now gobbling up so much of my Xtra 3GB allocation?
Last month we went through the 3GB for the 1st time ever to final level of 10GB at months end! So far in 4 days it's already done 1GB!
System: HP Notebook Pavillion tx1000 series runing Vista Home Edition, AVG and ZoneAlarm through Dlink DI624+ WiFi router (secured WPA), but usually connected on the LAN cable and into Dlink DSL302G modem.
Activity is obvious with the router/modem LED indications.
I've done a Scrooggle search but there are so many options to trial and don't really want to use the last 2GB of allocation....
Someone has installed something that's probably a reportback system and running in the background i guess!

Cheers Morri

Try another antispyware - Lavasoft is a good one.

Perhaps someone found out your laptop has a FTP server with anonymous access and posted things there? I've seen this before.

Run NETSTAT from a command prompt to see what programs have open ports.

I looked at network activity monitors recently. At the time I chose TrafficStatistic (www.trafficstatistic.com) but this is more of a monitor of ISP traffic (i.e. collector of daily stats, reporting for your IOSPs monthly period, etc.) than a monitor of what is using the network on your PC. There is also a breakdown of traffic over service and target host (top 10 of both) but not application. I also briefly tried NetLimiter(www.netlimiter.com) and from memory this could tell you who the application is that is using the network at any given time - and this might be more of what you are after. Both are freeware (IIRC for Netlimiter). Oops - just noticed the reference to Vista - I am using XP so checxk this angle before downloading.

Thanks freitasm for the NETSAT command... that will come in very handy (time to learn a whole lot more).

Thanks OldGeek, NetLimiter 2 Monitor now running perfectly under Vista and a RATHER large eye-opener to what's going on in the background! More study req'd to see what's what though.... Thanks again chaps.

Morri :-)

I remember another thread where this sort of problem was discussed:
