Hi Spark people.

Situation: we're moving to a new property soon which has existing fibre via Spark.  I currently have fibre where I am and understand the account move process (online).

Questions...

  1. Does moving my account from one house to another include "everything" including my current static IP (which I also have PTR DNS records for to use for my mail domain/system)
  2. ONT move request - I need to also move the ONT from the current location to my new home office/tech space around the other side of the house. The ONT is currently in the kitchen/dining area which we are renovating anyway in the near future (walls and all!) so a CAT6 run is out of scope for me for this.  Can an ONT move be done under the same job request and work done just prior to moving? Or is it best to put a request in separately?  (my mother in-law currently owns the property we're taking over/moving in to so that's not an issue either).
  3. Lastly, what do ONT moves generally cost?
(I read somewhere here that Chorus techs can be approached for this type of work... but I'm not sure on that one :)

PS I speak the language of geek'n'nerd so any tech stuff will be well understood.

Any help appreciated :)

Thanks for reading!

ONT move has to be logged via your ISP and you will be charged

You can contact Chorus directly regarding this. 0800 463 896, option 3. I called them yesterday regarding an ONT move. To save you the effort, all I was told was that a tech would need to visit the site, scope the work and provide a quote.

Please chat or call to raise this, then it can be done as one order.

If you do it online, the inital order will be without ONT move, and then you will have to wait or make a mess of the orders.

I don't recall us doing PTR records, so you certainly will have gotten a special helping there. That will all move across as part of a move order.

Thanks all.  These responses have been helpful already.

@hio77 - yes, I think some time back I managed to get onto someone who understood my predicament (mail server things), and set up the PTR record for me.  It was great service for sure.  I wasn't keen to use the (at the time) Xtra SMTP relay :)

Many thanks again guys  :)

Its a standard item on the rate card for RSP's. I feel like it would be much simpler to request via an RSP and save the quoting hassle.

Yup, and can be done on the same order as the move service so it's a real easy 1 order, 1 date thing :)

If I could just interject here. There are two types of ONT move - simple and complex.

A simple ONT move is where you wish to relocate it just a few metres in the same room, or back to back in an adjacent room. This sort of ONT move can be requested as part of your move of address. It's merely a standard move address order with a truck roll and an ONT relocation CSE added. Most RSP's have a fixed fee for this (either $199 or $299 from Spark from memory)

However a complex ONT move is where you wish to relocate it to a completely different part of the house - as in your case - which is likely to involve removing all or part of the existing cable and/or conduit back to the FTP, and then installing new cable via an alternate route to the other end of the house. This can sometimes involve reblowing the fibre and in some cases even an FTP relocation.

Complex ONT moves cannot be done by a standard provisioning technician - these have to be requested by the RSP as a "Move of Network" and are done by the network build team (different skill set). It follows the Network Design/Quote/Build process, and the whole process takes time to happen (generally weeks not days). It also must be done on a separate Modify order after the move address is complete.

If it were me in your situation, I'd just do a simple move of address first, then ask Spark to issue a Modify request for Move of Network. But please know you will be waiting a while for the Modify order to go through those Design/Quote/Build stages.

Ping me if you want more detailed info - happy to try and assist both you and Spark.

The views expressed by me are not necessarily those of my employer Chorus NZ Ltd
