Hi, not sure if this is correct forum, but this could fit in a few, so here we go:

I want to be able to send and receive SMS to/from my meda center PC, I don't want to go through one of the many SMS services on he web. I have a harrier, so I could use webservices fo part of it, but I would also like to be able to use he functionality outside T3G areas

What is the cheapest method to acheive this? I read elsewhere about a datacard, but it cost 500-600, so I thought that there must be a cheaper version.

Welcome to Geekzone... Perhaps you should look at Jeyo Mobile Companion. The program will list the SMS Inbox from your Pocket PC while it is connected to your computer. It will popup a dialog when a new message arrives, and you can reply (or create a new message) directly from the program.

When away with your Harrier messages will continue to arrive on your Pocket PC as usual.

It also allows you to backup messages to a file on your computer.

No different number, no additional card...

Thanks for the reply, but I should have been clearer:

I want to send messages to my MCE from my harrier, for various reasons, he most obvious being, "rats I forgot to video the simpsons" so I would then use an app on my Harrier which connected through either webservices or SMS if outside the T3G area, which would then start or schedule recording

Ah... This is quite different from what I understood from the OP.

Is there an application on the Windows Media Center that receives SMS? A datacard is an option. Another is to have a cheaper mobile phone and connect via cable (but not all will do it), and perhaps use FMA... I am not sure but I had the impression it support scripts. You will have to check it.

to be honest i have not seen any viable method with CDMA phones (except Pocket PCs) to access SMS through a PC. (Doesnt mean you cant though).

Most success stories for this sort of thing seem to come out of the GSM camp.

if you're on harrier. couldn't you just Remote Desktop in using Terminal Service on Harrier and over EVDO?

the other idea of having a phone "permanently" connected to MPC and an app to script the SMS and carry out operation as needed.

*hmmm this idea can be expanded to all mobile and pc to do SMS automated tasks, mmmm*

OK here's what I've found (for those that want to try it at home)

It's criminally easy to do with C# (with the 2.0 framework)
C# Serial Comms

And a sony ericsson mobile with the standard Sony serial data cable
Sending and receiving SMS

So now I just have to find a cheap old Sony mobile and write an MCE extension/plugin (there's an SDK) and I'll be away laughing

(This is for GSM btw)

mmmm sounds great!

waiting to hear more from ya about this, and who knows, you might able to package it and sell it as a next DIY smartpc?
