I am looking to get some clarification of the  impact of the EVDO shutdown. My wifes parents have been travelling in a caravan using a Sierra Wireless W597. Their contract expires in February 2011. I have made some enquiries on their behalf. The information that has been given in respect to the likely slow down in speed varies from virtually none to a usable download spead of 40 to 50kb. I would appreciate any help as to what the actual slow down in speed will be.

The other option the Telecom shop gave is to sign up to a new contract on XT. They are not keen to sign a new contract as they may not have a need for mobile Data past the middle of next year,

Thanks in Advance

Hard to say exactly what the speed will be, but from experience gathered before CDMA EVDO was introduced, CDMA 1xRTT is faster than this.

These speeds you are talking about are GPRS speeds. IIRC most of the times CDMA 1xRTT speeds were about 100Kbps+.

Cheers,

100kb is still a significant reduction in speed to the over 1 mb they have  been achieving. Hopefully Telecom will allow them  to move to XT without any contract extension.

XT data is cheaper on prepay I suggest you get telecom to disconnect your cdma stick and get a pre pay xt stick.

Prices are the same for the 2gb and 4gb plans on prepay and post pay however you get bonus credit on prepay effectively making the monthly charges cheaper.

Check it out on www.telecom.co.nz

I found that speeds on CDMA are usually in the region of 40-80k, with a maximum of 115k.
