Well every since i moved from the Telecom Bigtime plan to Pro plan i been getting these random ping spikes

no matter who's on or what i am doing i always get them. Tried with two different modems same result no one is using my wireless... tried with one pc on and with just another seeing if it was something in the background.

downloaded a bandwidth monitor to see if anything was running .. says using like 40 bytes at the moment

no idea what it is here is a tracert to Telecom.co.nz

4pm to 11pm is peak time (Kids get home from school and fire up Facebook/games/Torrents etc at 4pm). If you are in an area with a high contention ratio (ie lots of users connected through the gear at the cabinet/exchange) then you will notice this.

Not much you can do about this unless you are in an area where the exchange has been unbundled and you can connect to another ISPs gear.

What modem/router do you have? It's a bit weird the first hop (ie: your modem/router) is 100ms instead of 1ms.

Also is interleaving on? If you are a gamer ring up the help desk and ask to have it turned off.

What cabinet/exchange are you on?

Enter your address in this site to find out: http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

It's possible it's exchange/cabinet congestion in peak time if it's an older exchange or old cabinet that hasn't been upgraded recently.

Thanks for replying.

I have a Thomson TG585 also have an old D-link 504T and another one somewhere... Using the Thomson at the moment, I've heard that they ping high on the first hop due to firmware issues??. i connected using LAN so can't be any wireless issues, also i turned wireless off so no one can use it but me

interleaving is off, its been off for ages

i am currently connected to the PUT exchange ( Putaruru exchange ) The gear won't get upgraded until Jun 2011. So still using ADSL 1 technology. I heard there is only a 12 fiber going into Putaruru and it looks like they are going to upgrade it to a 144 as not enough bandwidth/capacity??. Seems the new cabinets are using a 96 at least? But i guess because most of the fiber was laid at a newer date.

But i been using ADSL here for about a year and never had any problems before. Even tho i should ping low to my 2ND hop as that's the DSLAMS IP ?

Right now its been going fine.. so lets hope its been fixed some how :/
