Is the handset in question a Telecom sourced handset (purchased from Telecom store) or a parrell import type handset?

Can you elaberate more on the locations where this occurs?

But the question was "is this phone from a Telecom store or a parallel imported?"

Was the previous owner using with Telecom?

If the Milestone is not a Telecom handset then it might be a 2100 MHz version. Telecom is a 850 MHz network with very few 2100 MHz cell sites (only used for capacity filling).

If this is a 2100 MHz handset it MAY work in some places in Auckland, Wellington, but may not work anywhere else.

A 2100 MHz handset is only good on 2degrees or Vodafone (and even so mainly in the larger cities).

You have to find out the origin of this handset before anyone can really help.

If it really does have WCDMA 850 then it should be fine on XT

WCDMA 850 is the Telecom version. It should work. Have you installed any other ROM or is it using the standard (stock) ROM?

Can you set it to something like 3G only?
