Hi,

I generally read forum posts off the front page, and up until today, clicking a topic/page would open up the post in a new Tab.

Today, it doesn't.

I quite enjoyed it as once I had read the post, I could just close the tab, and be back at the main page.

Is this by design, or am I missing something (tried on two browsers)?

Yes - now you don't end up with 100's of tabs if you browse Geekzone on mobile.

You can click the centre button of your mouse (or CTRL + Click on a laptop) if you want to open up a new tab.

Me too there is a bit of an "old dog new tricks" with me but I guess I can get used to it, or maybe a switch in our profile as an option?

Right click, open in new tab. Ctrl+click. Middle click.

No one is going to code an option that already exists natively in every browser.

While I understand some people may be taken aback with change, the reality is that the previous implementation (clicks opening in new tab) was really a modification of the expected browser behaviour.

The standard browser behaviour is to open links on the same tab and if you want to open on a new tab use CTRL-click. By opening on a new tab I was really not giving anyone a choice but imposing my preference.

Now everyone has a choice - open on the same tab or open on a new tab. This was not available before.

By default (with Chrome, anyway) Ctrl-click or middle click opens in a new tab, but the new tab is not in focus. I found the Chrome Extension Tab Activate that seems to alleviate this issue at least.

On Chrome Android it always opened in same tab anyway.

Or it could just be like it was, with a profile switch. Clearly I am getting old and set in my ways, so probably fair to dismiss my view.

I always middle-clicked on any links that I wanted opened in a new tab because I just assumed that if I left clicked then they'd open in the same tab, which is the standard browser behaviour. I usually scan through the list of new topics and middle-click on any that I'm interested in so they all open up in the background, then I close the topic list and work my way through all the new tabs. All of this on a desktop browser, I couldn't imagine trying to read on a mobile, way too much scrolling for my liking.

I guess I'll get used to it, but middle clicking doesn't open the tab in focus.

Just takes a while to change patterns - I've closed the geekzone tab a few times now.

Yay! It's now the same whether you click on a new topic or click on the arrow to see new posts. So *always* use the back-arrow to get to the topic list.
