I tried to order Vodafone cable today but was told that only VDSL and ADSL are available. However I can see the HFC cable at my door, it comes out of a plastic tube and is about 20cm away from the ETP, the Vodafone website also says I can get cable. I told the guy on the phone that I could see the cable and couldn't see why I couldn't get it, I was told that the cable was not active and so we couldn't use it.

How can the cable not be active? Why would the effort be put in to put the cable in underground to my door and then have it so it can't be used? Can it be activated?

Here is a picture of where the cable is, I can't get a good photo of what the cable looks like due to it being dark and my phone sucks. By green box do you mean cabinet, if so then yes there is one about 130-140M up the road.

It is hard to tell from that photo, but at a quick glance that doesn't look like a cable install. Need a better photo of the cable to tell exactly.

Where exactly do you live?

What do you mean it doesn't look like a cable install? I thought all they would need to do is to feed that black cable into my house an hook it up to the modem.

It doesn't mean its connected at the other end.
In the flat that i'm living in the cable was installed when the house was built and not connected at either end.
Telstraclear were nice enough to connected it for me, without it they may not have gone to the trouble as I am up a long drive.

Might not even be Vodafone Cable. It could be from the First Media (Telecom) trial for years ago.

I almost forgot to mention back when Telstra were around I signed up to cable and they sent out a guy out to install. Due to the installer wanting to do a quick job and not doing what was discussed I ended up on ADSL and never signed back up to cable till now.

So ZollyMonsta it is a Vodafone cable.

That cable is definitely Vodafones Cable (Old TelstraClear), too thick for 049 and First Media only ran RG6 not Siamese like Vodafone in Karori, Whitby and Pinehaven (Upper Hutt) by memory. You can ask for a site investigation from Vodafone and have a tech visit site to get the ball really rolling. For some reason Vodafone connect plenty of customers up to the Chorus network when the previous home owner/tenant were on Vodafones own network. First hand experience as I work for Downer, installing Chorus network and have plenty of Vodafones customers asking if I am doing their cable TV or ask me to setup their modem, hand me their Surfboard and expect us to connect it.

If you really want cable, call Vodafone and have them send a tech out to prove the cable and make sure it is installed into their PED.

As above request a site inspection as you can see the Cable and it's been connected before

Is it an easy thing to request? If I call up and ask will the person who answers be happy to arrange it or are they just going to try sell me VDSL instead?

That's not that unusual - I've heard of streets in Kelburn where one side can get cable, yet the other can't. What residential area is this?

Theres usually a green box on the foot path between every 2 or 3 houses, Thats where the houses connect to cable. If there isnt one it may be up on a power pole if there is overhead wiring
