I have several Windows XP SP3 computers here in a simple peer to peer network.
We have a program that enables those other computers to connect to one of the computers (called RR on the network) that runs a server-type program. One computer has been wiped clean and I'm now trying to re-install the client (I think that's what it's called) program to connect to the server program on RR.

I know through the "ODBC Data Source Administrator" I have to connect the client computer to the server one (RR).


In that ODBC panel I have copied what is on the other already connected computers: I click "Add", then fill in the same "Name", "Description" and "Server". The server field is : RR\SQLEXPRESS.


I then click next and set the same settings as the other connected clients: "With Windows NT authentication...", and "Connect to SQL Server to obtain default settings..."


Then when I click "Next" it obviously tries to connect to RR\SQLEXPRESS, but can't and comes up with the error:


The client computer has MS SQL Server compact 3.5 and 4 installed. Also .NET 2, 3 and 3.5. The computers are connected fine over the network.

Is anyone able to please assist this not-really-that-geeky person?

RR/SQLEXPRESS (screenshot) and RR\SQLEXPRESS (text) are not interchangeable values - it's probably meant to be the latter. Is RR the name of the computer running the database, and presumably it resolves correctly to an IP? What if you just have RR in that field. Presuambly since it's SQLExpress there's only one instance, so you may not need to specify the instance name.

Yeah, it should probably be RR\SQLEXPRESS, not RR/SQLSERVER as it shows in your screenshot.

OOPS!

Okay RR/SQLEXPRESS and RR\SQLEXPRESS and RR and RR\ do not work. Same error.

And the windows account you're logged on to the client as, has permission to connect to the SQL instance?

For a start, if that doesnt respond you don't have much chance :)

I'd take off that tick for check default settings using the user name with the space in it too?

And whenever i've done dbase connections like this I've used the fileDSN tab, it differs from the user one. Make sure its the same on the others

even:
telnet rr 1433

might let you know if its responding too

Ping is fine. Like I say I can browse files from RR on the server machine.

Unticked the default settings option and filled in the other boxes as per a connecting machine, including checking the "Client Configuration" button and checking that was the same, but no go.

Checked the "File DSN" tab and it's blank, as per the working machines.

Is there something I have to do on the RR server to let the client in?

If you're using Windows authentication, which your screenshots suggest you are, the windows user account will need permissions on the DB instance.

Before it was wiped, the user name may have been something like EBMCLIENT1

If its now say, USER2... you need to goto RR and configure the database and add the user USER2.. as its no longer EBMCLIENT1

Infact, if you load the sql instance on RR, look at the users. You might get an idea of what username you need to create on the fresh built PC and login to it with

I was thinking it may be something like that, but I do not know how to configure the database. On the server machine RR I've had a look through it with "SQL Server Management Studio Express" but don't know what I'm doing. I looked for other computer names on there that work, then I thought I may be able to replicate the settings, but couldn't find anything I recognised.

Is there an easy way to explain that here, or is it time to get someone who knows what they are doing?

Try running the query: SELECT * FROM Sys.login_token

 and see if the windows user you are trying to connect with is listed there?

If not, add a new windows authenticated user following these steps, and then try the ODBC connection again.

You could also try creating a new database login using sql server authenitcation instead of windows user authentication, and use that in the ODBC settings.
