HI, Im having a problem deleting user details from my xp system. I have recently bought the computer s/hand a few weeks ago and unfortunatly didnt receive the xp disk. I am trying to delete the previous users details that come up when i view the "windows task manager" it still dispays the previous owners user name even though he is not listed in the user accounts. How can this be? is ther anything i can do to fix this without the xp disk? thanks alot anyone who can help...

The previous owner probably have installed some software that will run as a service or on startup.

You can remove old software using the Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, but you will probably never get the machine as clean as possible.

Also, do you have a Windows sticker on this PC? If not, then the Windows copy is not official, and should be considered a pirate copy. If yes, then you could try getting a replacement Windows disk and use the same key as in the sticker.

However if this is brand (HP, Dell, etc) computer it will probably need some special drivers if there's anything different in it.

Thank you very much. it does have a windows sticker on is that the only way i can do it "by getting a replacement windows cd" ?

You can probably fully Reinstall windows (destructive recovery) by pressing f10 or f11 when the system starts up (don't go into windows) if it's a brand name machine. (hp, dell, NEC, Packard bell, Compaq)

You will lose everything on the PC however but sounds like a good idea

Easiest fix is to log in as local Admininstrator, fire up the task manager and stop any processes with the username to be deleted. Once stopped, delete the user folders from c:\documents and Settings.
