My hard disk failed about a week ago so I had to do a full reinstall of Ubuntu 12.10. For some reason now I've got more than 200 instances of sh running when I look in the System Monitor. Has anybody else had this happen? They're not using any CPU or RAM but they are there none the less.
Maybe I have spent too long around Windows machines, but are they still present after a reboot? Are they consistent in number or is it a number of things starting and stopping all the time?
After a reboot there are only 3 in the list. The only thing I don't have running that I had last time (that I can remember) is PS3 Media Server so it could be tied to that.
Starting PMS didn't cause it to happen. There have been a couple of updates since I posted this so it may have been a known bug.
Have a look at what the parent these sh processes are. In a console window 'ps -ef' will show the parent process ID (PPID), then look at which process has that number as it's (PID) process ID. ie sh s will have different PIDs but may have PPID of 123, look for process with PID of 123. I'm sure you can do it in X but not sure how.
