Hi guys,

I have Ubuntu 11.04 and i'm having trouble with my USB and External not mounting automatically. I'm a bit of a Linux noob so bear with me.

When i plug in my USB i see it in Disk Utility but it doesn't mount.

I followed this guide.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB

My auto mount settings are fine but it doesn't mount. I get this error

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with:
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is already mounted on /
mount failed

I normally mount manually which is annoying.

I assume that it is trying to mount my USB where my internal hard drive is already mounted.

Any help would be much appreciated.

This suggests that your USB disk was detected as /dev/sda and it tries to mount /dev/sda1 which fails because it thinks that /dev/sda1 is already mounted.

Remember in linux, /dev/sda is the whole drive,
The device /dev/sda1 is the first partition on that drive.

In most cases, the first SATA disk will be detected by linux as /dev/sda
Then the second disk (which might be USB) will be /dev/sdb

However if the first hard disk is detected as something else - /dev/hda used to be common.
Then the next SCSI/SATA/USB dive that you plug in is most likely going to become device /dev/sda

Can you show us the output of the df command (without the USB drive plugged in).
Plus # cat /etc/mtab

The other useful thing can be to monitor /var/log/messages
# tail -f /var/log/messages

Then plug in your USB drive - what do you see?
