Hello,

Me and my missus have the usual board games - Mouse trap, Monopoly, Scrabble etc. but we are looking for something different.

I looked around and found one called Zombies ! ! ! but there's 11 versions and I have no idea if its any good? Anyone played it? Which version should I get?

I have also seen some others with good ratings called 'Twilight' - not related to the films and 'Pathfinder' - no idea about this one. There's also a Walking Dead one but couldn't find any reviews on it.

My partner isn't interested in Dungeons and Dragons otherwise I'd probably give that a go, any other ideas?

Thanks.

Very few people are aware that there are 'board games', and then there are board games :P
The Settlers of Catan are very popular.

I would recommend carcassone, thats a really good and fun game to play. pretty simple rules (many of the better board games have very complex rules).

Not sure where you're located, but there's an excellent games & puzzle shop in Orewa. Run by an ex-engineer who does it as his semiretirement hobby. He knows *all of them* like the back of his hand and will actually sit down with you and play a game to demonstrate.

Down on the beach strip of shops. There's an upstairs restaurant, and a cafe underneath (can't think of their names) - it's next to the cafe. If you are in Hillary Square, there's the other carpark on the same side of the street but right off the highway. Just about there.

Bought some games there for Christmas presents, he's a great guy.

For those in Wellington, Toy World stocks an ok range of eurogames. You can also buy online from a shop like http://seriouslyboard.co.nz/ or http://www.gamedepository.com/

Some of my favourites are (in no particular order)
  • Settlers of Catan (including seafarers expansion)
  • Carcasonne (with lots of expansions)
  • Bang
  • Dominion
  • Dixit
  • 7 Wonders
  • Alhambra
  • Castle Panic
  • 6 Takes
  • Asara
  • Ticket to Ride

I have the basic 2nd edition version of zombies. With two players and the standard rules it is not much competitive. Four players upwards its a competitive and fun party game easy to learn in a few minutes. As a two player it is not much fun.

But +1 for Carcasone. It's great as a two player game, more players really good as well. Watch a how to play video on YouTube. After a couple of games you'll be hooked I guarantee it. : )

My wife, her sister, their mother and I often play Dominion. It's a great board game (without the board), and pretty easy to pick up. It holds up to re-playing because the variety of cards, even within a single version of the game, mean you can change the dynamics very easily. There are also a lot of expansion packs (Intrigue, Prosperity, Alchemy, Seaside, etc), which can make for some pretty unique combinations. Mighty Ape has some pretty good prices from time to time. Dominion is playable as a two player game, but it works best with 3-4 players. 4+ players is possible with the expansion packs (for the extra treasure and victory point cards), but it can make the game really long. We had a six-player game over easter that went for about an hour and a half.

There's also an (unofficial, I think) app on iOS and Android for Dominion, which lets you play the original version with others, or against 1-3 computer players. When it was available, it was free, but I don't think you can get it anymore. There is a web version (official) at www.goko.com, where I think you can sign up and play for free any and all of the versions of Dominion, against humans or computers. Great for when you need to scratch the Dominion itch...

Another board game (with an actual board) that my wife bought for me last year is Terry Pratchett's "Ankh Morpork" game. if you're a fan of the Discworld series of books, and you like board games, then this is a must. It's a great mix of games like Dominion, Risk, Cluedo, but with in-jokes for all Terry Pratchett fans. What I've found most intriguing about this game, though, is that it's a board game that works really well for two people. A lot of board games need three or more people for it to be fun (like Dominion), but this one actually works better (I think) with two people. My wife and I have played this game almost weekly for the last six months, and we're still not bored with it. Add in a third or fourth person and it's still fun, but just fiendishly difficult to keep your strategy straight.

dominion is good, but has a lot of shuffling. i wouldnt bother with most expansions, Intrigue is great, but seaside, prosperity, alchemy dont really add anything good to the game.

race for the galaxy is one we replay most often, it's pretty complex to pickup (theres a free pc based version to help you learn), but its quick and has loads of replay value.

munchkin is a fun game.

Agreed that there's a lot of shuffling, but that's never been a problem for us.  We've got Intrigue, Prosperity, and Alchemy, and they all have their own styles.  Prosperity is great because it introduces victory point tokens, which allows for some interesting gameplay in minimising the number of "pointless" victory cards in your shuffling deck during your turn.  it also introduces the higher value Platinum treasure card and the Colony victory card, which is great when playing with larger numbers of people and can make for some crazy long action rounds followed by big spending.  Alchemy is cool because it brings in the Potion card, which adds another layer of strategy.  We don't play Alchemy games very often, but it's nice to have the option of refreshing the gameplay with the different expansions.  IMO. :)
