Hi Guys,

Just wondering where the best places are to buy fireworks. Last year we bought from the Warehouse which were fine. I've noticed a lot of pop up stores in shipping containers all over Auckland, has anyone bought from these, and are they good value? Located in West Auckland.

I am actually pretty horrified at the number of places selling them, same with Xmas trees. I saw a Vaccum cleaner place selling them today.

I have no issue (in general) with fireworks, but man anyone can sell them eh?

I was thinking of getting a box for my kids, but we found that a lot of them wanted to make a lot of noise, and they (and we) are more interested in the actual fireworks part. If they were largely silent and really pretty, we would be over the moon.

The nanny state and the animal rights whingers have already taken most of the fun out of fireworks, hardly seems worth it any more for the pitiful things you can get now.

They should be for sale year round, and there should be no limits on the type.. bring back the boom!

I don't know for sure I never buy but I would guess the Warehouse would be a good start

Following, I'm used to fireworks from Poland and Germany which is pretty powerful. Not sure how the NZ stuff matches up yet, keen to try :)

Got Countdown's a couple of years ago, Didn't seem that great.

They were like 75% off on the last day ($20 for a box which is normally $80)

As per OP; the "best deal" is to go to put your wallet back in your pocket and don't buy them at all.

Am biased myself, but I remember growing up and being given the option of whether we wanted to get fireworks or be given the same amount of cash to buy toys....it was a no brainer - toys every time. I will be giving my son the same choice when his time comes around :)

the warehouse has a low noise box. Aurora Low Noise Firework Box for $50

What's your skill set chemistry like? If you aren't too attached to your fingers, you could always have a go at making them.

A mates dad used to be an industrial chemist, and used to make them for the family when they were kids. Never saw them, but from the (corroborated) description I have had related to me they were easily the best fireworks on the street.

Plus, if done properly it means that you could get the interesting ones (catherine wheels, bangers and jumping jacks etc) that those of us who have been wrapped in many layers of swaddling by vigilant Nanny State aren't allowed any more.

It's a few years since I have let off fireworks, maybe I'm getting old. But from time to time I do toy with the idea of making some.

Have you seen the state of my dog or horses after morons let fireworks off willy-nilly all over the place?

They should be banned completely until NZer's can act responsibly with them.

Must be showing my age...but I am over fireworks. Last few years we have purchased a small box for the kids to watch, and also go to a local public display to see some real stuff go off. Fireworks today are a shadow of their former glory. To be honest I can't wait until they are banned for private use completely.

I see every man and his dog are selling them this year. So who's best in your area I can't say. I normally grab a small family box from The Warehouse which kept the kids happy. Tried a box from one of those pop-up roadside stalls (Bang Brothers or something along those lines), definitely a better quality product but expensive as hell. The Warehouse again for me I suppose this year, value for money if nothing else.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

i like me fireworks - always have

in recent years i have found thumping thunder, pyro company and black widow fireworks to be too my liking - which is loud - with a bias towards mortar cannon types :)

must admit i stocked up a couple of years back when noise was being made of banning sale of them - so i am still working my way through some of these still ...

i however understand new rules may have led to a reduced powder load so they may be less grunty this year.

I'm disappointed with the quality of responses to the OPs original question. We're looking to buy some more and I was hoping to get some good hints. Am planning to visit Badboy Fireworks tomorrow.

We've bought at the Warehouse on Monday when they were mostly 25% off. They have a useful buying guide which made comparisons easier - we ignored sparklers and spinners when comparing the contents as they are so cheap anyway. We can't tell how good they are as we won't be using them until after firework sales stop

The following are what we thought were the best deals. We bought the Megashot box which was $35 off at $40 now $70. We also got Aurora which was $35 and is now $50 because we want more colour than noise. For that reason we'd avoid the Big Big Boom Box, Super Romans, Demolition, Moon Striker and Colossus boxes which are better for more sound. The bigger the bang then the higher the average cost per firework.

Now we'd probably go for the Reload - $5 cheaper (was 2 for $150) at $70 than it was on Monday - or maybe the Astroblazer, 2 for $115.
