With household appliances and gadgets getting their own apps, I just want to try a few and buy a dedicated app device on a trial basis for home use. I am not sure which platform to go with as I am a Windows Phone user. In this scenario, would an iPod suffice or a small Android tab is a better deal? Thank you.

I would go for an ipod / ipohne / ipad for this as they have the fastest response time.
I find these devices more responsive than a cheap / mid priced android. ( my iphone 5 is considerably faster than my quad core Samsung Galaxy Core )
A cheap Android tablet will be a waste of time, I have one here that is collecting dust, it was press a key and wait 5 seconds.
Windows devices are still lacking apps in this arena but it is catching up fast.

I can use my devices to control my Tivo, WDlive TV, LG 4k TV, Onkyo Amp.

The Tivo and Onkyo apps are far more responsive that the remotes, pressing a button and waiting frustrates me.

ipod touch is what I seem to hear most of the automation places suggesting people get.

my vote is android.  I have home automation setup and 2 wall mounted android tablets.

I would love to replace these with windows tablets (much faster/more powerful) but the software isnt there.

I'm using ImperiHome on the android devices.  Android is much more flexible and more customizable making it a much better choice for this type of thing IMO.

iPad Mini 4 is the best unit I've used for this application.
Palm-able, quick, well built and you know the apps in the app store will run.
